Today would have been perfect if it wasn't for Adam Shaslov's new girlfriend. It was pouring buckets as I waited patiently for the F train. My vans were soaked through to their rubber soles. I chattered and checked my phone for the time. If Adam wasn't here by the next train I would be forced to ditch him. It wasn't like i was compelled to do so. Adam was my best friend and I had been sporting a silly schoolgirl crush on him since middle school. Adam was an immigrant. He was born in Russia. But to mix with the American crowd his parents gave him a simple biblical name and sent him off to public school.
"Hey!" I heard a familiar voice behind me as I swiveled around. There was Adam strutting down the stairs... but with company. A red headed girl clinging to his arm. I was in utter aghast.
"Oh hi, and who is this joining us?" I asked, trying to be polite as possible. Normally Adam and I would swear like sailors.
"This is Jenny. My new girlfriend, she wanted to tag along." He smiled, Adam and Jenny's arms were in grip lock. I wanted to rip them apart and maybe just rip off Jenny's limbs too but instead i pretended to be happy about this union.
"I'm pleased to meet you. I'm Olive and I'm so happy someone finally saved this poor boy." I joked, Jenny genuinely giggled. She had a cute laugh. Dammit.
I need to make one thing clear though. Jenny was absolutely gorgeous. Her natural red hair bounced off her shoulders, she was tall and curvy with bright green eyes. She spoke with a sing song voice and when she smiled you could get a good look at her dimples. I knew Adam was a sucker for dimples.
Adam laughed too. The F train flew by with a gust of cold wind before screeching to a holt. The three of us bolted in and scavenged for seats.
"Here baby. Take my seat." Adam graciously got up and took Jenny by the hand leading her towards her throne. My legs were aching but I showed no signs of weakness. I needed to show this chick whose boss.
Usually Adam would walk me to my door, i'd punch his shoulder, crack a joke and be on my merry way but today he barley muttered "goodbye".
It felt as though he had ripped out my heart without anesthetics. Without closure, Without warning. I stomped up the peeling paint stairs to my apartment. My key got stuck in the door and I pushed it open. I had lived in this apartment my whole life and my mother moved in 3 years before i was born. It was spacious enough fot the two of us with big windows, high ceilings and wood floors.
My mother wasn't home yet which meant she was still at the studio. I sped through homework and promptly stomped to my room where i snuggled into my Hello Kitty comforter and watched Netflix till my eyes ached. I wanted to fill the empty void in my heart. But sadly I learned a good TV show wasn't a substitute. It needed to be filled with love and I wasn't getting that anytime soon. I heard the door open as my mom called out "Hey Olive!."
I walked out to greet her and put on a smile but she knew me better then that.
"What's the matter baby?" She asked putting her hand on my shoulder. I shrugged.
"I'm fine."
"Whatever you say baby. Now we can either get Chinese or Thai?" She shuffled through delivery menus and reached for her phone.
"Thai." I said quietly and returned to my room.

That night I tossed and turned and all I could think about was Jenny and Adam. It was unhealthy as I began towards my computer a voice in my head said You're just going to make in worse for yourself. I ignored it and logged on to faceboook.
Yep. Adam had changed his status to "In a relationship." And uploaded several pictures of them together embracing. Fuck.
As I continued to stalk Jenny's profile the revelation came to me. Why Adam picked her over his best friend. Because she wasn't normal she was stunning and I can love him to death, give him everything he ever wanted somehow and it wouldn't even faze him. Because Jenny was noticeable, in the spot light. She was and always will be a winner and I pathetically will always be me.
