I can't sleep I keep rolling and tossing around in bed so much that even Twinkie has now gotten out of bed. She wasn't to happy with me either as she meowed once out of aggravation before leaving the room.
I look out my window out to the moon in the sky thinking of my dad.
"Wherever I am we'll be looking at the same moon." He'd tell me before leaving for work again. His job as a surgeon took him to a lot of places, but he always made sure to call and send pictures. Then one day I didn't get the phone call, or the next, until finally the phone did ring with his number but the voice on the other end wasn't him.
He was shot to death and left in the streets to die, alone and cold, on a full moon. Nobody still knows why, the police think it was just a wrong place at the wrong time moment, since he wasn't robbed. They couldn't be more wrong I was robbed of my best friend and everyone just went on with there lives.
Everyone, except me.
Tap.Tap.Tap.
"Twinkie you better not be in the cat food!" I say loudly. Dang cat always up to something. I walk into the kitchen to see it empty, no cat, no food spread everywhere, and more importantly no sound.
Tap.Tap.Tap.
"Twinkie where are you?"I say in a sing song voice, looking around the room.
Boom. A loud bang makes my heart jump.
Maybe she went outside. I think to myself. I mean there is a doggy door she can go through. But part of me, the part that watches to much supernatural, is thinking yeah right when is it ever the cat.
Yeah. Right. Never.
I grab the flashlight out of the drawer anyways and slowly open the door to go out.
"Meeeooooowwgrrrr!" I look off the porch to see Twinkie looking out into the woods with her hair standing up.
Ok what would Sam and Dean do. Well they'd grab a gun, shoot it, and burn it. But I can't do that unfortunately because one I have a flashlight and two I'm already outside.
I'm frozen as I stand there in my thin pajamas holding the flashlight,I can feel the hair rising up on my neck and hear my heart pounding in my ears as Twinkie remains in the same spot hissing.
I try calling for her to get her to come to me so we can go inside. At least inside there isn't strange things that can attack you. She's still not moving so I decide to walk off the porch to her, every thought I have is of all the horror movies I've watched where the girl does something stupid then gets killed.
Guess I'll be the stupid girl that gets killed over her cat. I think trying to drown out my fear with humor. I go to pick Twinkie up, and at the same time my hand goes to reach for her, is the same time she decides to scratch me and I drop the flashlight.
"Well that's uncalled for."I scowl as she darts back into the house. Yeah that's right leave me with the big bad wolf, coward.
I go to pick up the flashlight, when I hear some leaves rustling along with a light growl. Well looks like it's time for me to go back inside. I all but run back to the porch, not even taking a chance to look behind me, and slamming the door and locking it before pressing against it with my back.
Since when has my life decided to be a dang thriller. I finally decide to get away from the door and turn on the t.v. Watching it should at least distract me long enough to calm me down.
I pick up the remote and turn it on. The Man in the Moon is playing and I smile as I watch Reese Witherspoon fall in love. I think of the last conversation I had with my dad as the movie fades off in the background of my thoughts.
****
"Dad, I have a question," I say watching for his reaction."Shoot it kid," he says tightening a bolt on the engine of the truck, just because he was a surgeon didn't mean he didn't like fixing up the truck. When he wasn't working on trips he was here, in the garage working on old red, he even started showing me how to do it.
"Can you tell me what it's like to be in love?" He looks up from the engine with a look of fain shock and somewhat amusement.
"Awww is my Violet Rose in love for the first time?" He questions with a laugh.
"No dad god, gross, I was just wondering you know for future reference on what signs to look out for, like how did you know you was in love with mom." I say trying to take the attention off of me.
" Well I guess it's something you just know whenever it happens.." He shrugs going back to his work," One day you'll meet someone and it'll just click, you know you'll never meet another person like them, when you talk to them the conversation just flows, and next thing you know you've begun to realize that this is your person and yours alone." He looks up to me to smile and I smile back, thinking of the beautiful woman in all of his pictures throughout the house.
I don't know much about my mom she died when I was three, but my dad says I look a lot like her, and that whatever I got from him was just attitude.
"You remind me of her everyday." He looks at me with a loving stare. He wipes his hand off with the towel laying on the battery.
" You want a coke?" He asks grabbing two out of the fridge, handing me one as he goes to sit down on the steps. I sit down with him taking my drink and opening it up.
He stares up at the sky, at the full moon glowing so bright it could be the second sun.
"Your mom used to say the moon was beautiful, but even it kept things hidden, I've never till this day figured that one out." He chuckles. " but she was a woman of mystery."
I close my eyes thinking back on the moon that night and my dad, as sleep finally takes me away.
