Chapter 5: Mortal friends at Lunch

Katie's POV

Time really flew by in Math and Science class, now it was lunch. Thalia told me that they had quite a few mortal friends, and would introduce us later. Percy entered the canteen first, followed by the rest of us. We grabbed our food before heading to his table. There, seated at the table were 3 girls and 2 boys.

"Hey guys, these are my friends from camp. Guys, this is Celeste, Natalia, they're twins, Cassandra, although she prefers Cass, Ben and Josh.

"Hey", "Nice to meet you" they chorused.

"Hi, I'm Annabeth Chase, nice to meet you guys." Annabeth introduced.

"She's my girlfriend." Percy said proudly while Annabeth turned a deep red.

At this, I noticed that one of the girls- Cassandra I think- wore a downcast look on her face. I guess she had a crush on Percy, and she must be heartbroken knowing that Annabeth was his girlfriend. From the look on Annabeth, she must have reached the same outcome as I did.

Seeing that Travis and Conner had already introduced themselves, with a party popper no less, I introduced myself, gesturing to Travis, "Hi, I'm Katie Gardner, this idiot here is my boyfriend."

"Hey!" Travis nudged me.

After making some small conversation between the twelve of us, Annabeth gestured to me and asked Cassandra whether she wanted to talk. She hesitantly agreed, so we went into the girls' bathroom.

Cassandra's POV

"So, what did you want to talk about?" I asked.

Tears threatened to fall. I had a crush on Percy since the day we met, he stuck up for me and we became best friends along with the other four. Now I felt totally crushed when he announced that that girl from camp, Annabeth was his girlfriend. How funny, crushed by my crush. Haha. Not.

"Cass, you have a crush on Percy, am I right?" Annabeth asked me gently.

I nodded as tears trickled down my cheeks.

"Percy probably didn't realise that you liked him, being so oblivious. It took Percy four years to realise that he liked Annabeth and she liked him back. I'm really sorry." Katie said.

"I know. I dropped him so many hints and he never realised. But don't worry, I will get over him, I won't try to steal him from you. It's obvious that you make him really happy, I've never seen him so happy before. I want Perce to be happy though. Anyway, since you're from camp, I guess you're demigods as well?"

At this, Katie and Annabeth shared a glance.

"How did you know about...those stuff? Percy told you about us?" Annabeth asked cautiously.

"Yeah, apparently I'm a clear-sighted mortal. At least that's what he says. He told me about you guys once as he thought I was a demigod. Once, there was a hellhound attack outside of school and I was with him. The others saw it as a poodle, but I saw otherwise and panicked. He used his sword and pricked my finger. Turns out the sword just passed through my finger."

"I see, well, I'm a daughter of Athena." Annabeth replied.

"Daughter of Demeter here. The Stolls are sons of Hermes. Thalia, daughter of Zeus and Nico, son of Hades." Katie said.

"Percy's a son of Poseidon right? From what I heard before, monsters are readily attracted to their scent since their children of the Big Three *cue thunder*. But now there are seven of you guys, won't there be more monsters after you?" I asked.

"Well, the Gods put a protection border around Goode because there are so many of us and so many mortals. So, I hope, there won't be any monster attacks." Annabeth replied.

Just then, the bell rang, signalling the end of lunch.

"I guess we'd better head back, I think the guys are looking for us." Katie said.

I got up and we walked out of the bathroom together. Both Annabeth and Katie gave me a little hug. No doubt, I felt a little better than just now. I was going to move on, knowing that Percy was happy with Annabeth. I could just feel that Katie and Annabeth were going to be one of my very best friends from now on, along with Celeste and Nat.
