When Dan and Phil were together, they never looked happier. They looked like they were soulmates, destined to spend eternity glancing at each other with lovesick smiles on their faces. They were the "it" couple at their school, and every one was sure they'd be together forever. But that was before Dan broke Phil's heart, before Dan found a crack he couldn't fix.

Everyone knew Dan and Phil were a beautiful couple. Phil would know how to make Dan smile when doing so seemed an impossible feat, and Dan knew how to listen to Phil and smile at him in the way that let Phil know that he was supported and cared about. But Dan was never quite as happy as
he thought he should be, and Phil was never quite enough to make the feeling disappear, not for long enough anyway. Dan was sinking and Phil was no longer enough to pull him back to the surface and nothing scared him more.

What started as a sliver of space between them grew into a crack, a gap, a hole, a canyon, until it broke the very land they stood on and left them with nothing, not even each other. They never knew what to tell people who asked why they had broken up, because they didn't quite know themselves. They went their separate ways, never paying the other any mind. At least, that's what they wanted people to think, and they were so convincing that they convinced each other.

Dan didn't bother trying to hide the bags under his eyes anymore. He just threw on his regular black clothes and slung his backpack over his shoulder, being careful to avoid the bruise on his ribcage, courtesy of the school bullies. Ever since Dan and Phil had broken up, Dan had fallen to the bottom of the food chain, and he didn't appear to be getting out anytime soon. This meant constant harassment, whether it be verbal or physical or a mix of both. His parents never asked, no one at school ever asked, so he didn't tell. He just avoided the problem areas and pushed on.

Dan skipped breakfast for the 4th time that week, ignoring the rumbling in his stomach as he made his way to school. Music blocked out the sounds of the world as he walked, head down, staring at his feet. The walk to school was short, which meant Dan had to avoid everyone until the bell rang.

Dan hurried into the building, looking down as his feet traced the familiar hallways, leading him to his locker. Dan had just finished switching out his books when Phil, Chris, and Pj walked by. Every time they did this, Dan thought about how Phil used to pause, real subtly, like he was going to say something before continuing down the hall. And this reminded Dan of something he'd tried to forget.

(Flashback)
"Hey, Howell." Casper snarled, pushing Dan against the side of the building in a way that was far from sexual. Dan didn't outwardly show any emotion, staring Casper in the eyes the way he knew he hated. Casper glared at Dan, getting in his face. "What have I said about eye contact?" Casper growled, motioning to his boys as he stepped back.

After Dan didn't answer him, he waved his boys forward, giving them the okay to do their worst. "Maybe I'll just have to remind you." He said, watching as Dan was punched and kicked over and over and over.

"Shit." One of them said, pausing his attack on Dan. "Its Phil."

"So?" Caspar asked, waving his hand slightly as if to tell him to keep going. "They broke up."

"Just because they broke up doesn't mean Phil's going to be okay with us beating him!" He hissed at Casper. Caspar sighed, snapping his fingers and alerting the boys to pause their attack.

"Phil, nice to see you." Casper said, smiling sweetly as Phil got close enough to talk to. "We're not crossing any boundaries here, are we?"

Phil looked from Dan to Casper, his eyes lingering on Dan a second before flickering back to Casper. "No. Its none of my business what you do to him now." Phil said quietly before making his leave.
