I dedicate this chapter in honour of the librarian at my school who is also my former english teacher. She's hilarious. i would like you all to imagine an old lady saying 'TIME TO PARTY' that's how she says it and it is hilarious
It was the night of Demetria’s sweet sixteen party and Nicki was helping Demi pick which of the five dresses in her closet. There were two that they thought would be perfect for the event but they couldn’t decide on which one Demetria should wear. They had spent an hour trying to decide whether Demi should wear the purple strapless dress that ruffled from the waist to just below her knees or the green dress that hugged her skin perfectly.
“Why don’t we flip a coin, heads for the green one and tails for the purple one? At this rate we’ll have you wearing both dresses, one on top of the other,” Nicki exclaimed. Demi had to agree with her. She was tired of having to change into the two dresses every five minutes.
The coin was flipped and it landed on tails. “The purple one it is,” Nicki shouted in exasperation. She had never spent so long picking out an outfit in her life. “Now you put that on and I’m gonna go change.”
A minute or two after Nicki left the room, Demetria’s phone rang. She answered the cell which she regretted almost instantaneously. Jasmine was shouting at Demi because guests had started arriving twenty minutes before and Demi still hadn’t shown her face. Demi apologized and told her that it was a fashion emergency. Jaz quieted down quickly enough.
“Do you need me to come over and help?” Jaz knew everything that involved fashion and if there was an emergency well… Demetria was lucky that Jaz was at the party and not in the apartment.
“No, it’s fine now. I’m actually just about to leave.”
“Ok, see you in a few.” The girls hung up and Demi returned her attention to getting ready. She still had her make-up to put on.
Twenty minutes later Nicki and Demi left the apartment and drove to the location of the party. When they walked into the building Nicki said she had to take care of something so Demi should enter the hall herself.
When Demetria entered the hall, the first person to greet her was Damian. Damian was a senior unlike Demi who was a junior. Demetria was the most popular girl among all the girls in the high school for her kind heart. Everyone wanted to be her. Damian was the most popular guy at LaGuardia so she shouldn’t have been surprised when he was the first to wish her happy birthday. But she was.
“Hey Damian.”
“Happy Birthday Demetria.”
“Thanks.” Just then everyone at the party realized that Demetria had arrived and pushed Damian out of the way to greet her and give her birthday wishes.
Once everything had settled down a bit and people returned to dancing or eating, Damian walked back over to Demi. “Cool crowd huh?”
“I guess so.” Demetria was shy around Damian, she had had a crush on him since the first day she had attended LaGuardia. The fact that he was talking to her now made her feel as if she may just pass out from shock. What she didn’t know was that he had a crush on her as well.
“Um… would you like to dance?” Demetria nodded and noticed that a slow song was playing. She blushed. It meant that she would be pressed up against Damian for a minimum of three minutes.
They walked out to the dance floor. Demi wrapped her arms around Damian’s neck while he wrapped his around her waist. As they slow danced they got transported into another world. They felt as though there was no one in the room but themselves. Demetria felt the energy between them and she wondered Damian could feel it too.
When the song ended they just stood there, enjoying the feeling of being in each others arms. “Demetria… would you go on a date with me?”
“S-sure.” Demetria was shocked that someone like Damian would want to ask her out but it made her smile to think that he might actually like her.
“I have another question?”
“Yeah?”
“Who’s the live entertainment for tonight?”
“I don’t know, my ‘mom’ wouldn’t tell me.”
“Why’s you say mom like that” Demi quickly explained the whole adoption thing before they heard a screeching that could only be heard if someone was using the microphone. Everyone in the room looked up at the stage. Demetria’s eyes opened wide in shock when she saw who it was on stage. The one person whose music helped her when she was at her lowest. The one whose music helped her when she thought there was no hope left in the world. Nicki. Minaj.
“What’s up with all of you? This party looks a little sleepy. Let’s get some energy pumping through this place” And Nicki began singing Automatic. It took everyone a minute to realize what was going on, but when they did they started to dance like they had never danced before.
All in all, it was an awesome party; Demi had fun, got asked on a date, was able to dance with her friends and had Nicki Minaj there. Life couldn’t be greater.
It was three in the morning. Jay, Shawna, Jaz and Demi were still awake. They were talking about how awesome the party was and they thought no other party by anyone else could ever top. Which was probably very true.
Jaz then remembered a very important part of the evening that they had just had. “Demi, didn’t I see you dancing with Damian?” She had a sly grin on her face.
“Uh, yeah.” Demetria was nervous. When Jaz got that look on her face, there was no telling what she would do or the questions she would ask.
“You two seemed quite cozy. Is there something you forgot to tell us?”
“I don’t think so. Didn’t I tell you all that I had a crush on Damian?” Shawna and Jay both nodded expressing to both the girls that Demetria had in fact said something. Demetria realized that she had forgotten to tell Jasmine.
“Oh, I have a crush on Damian. And… we’re gonna go out on a date sometime.”
“Wait! He asked you out,” Jay shouted.
“Yes.” Jay was hurt. Demetria hadn’t told them that she had been asked out on a date by the most popular boy in the school. They were friends and they told each other everything –from the achievements that they made at school to if one of the girls was having their period to whether any of them had lost their virginity.
Demetria felt bad. She had meant to tell her friends about it the moment they had all settled in but the whole conversation had been deterred because her friends had started talking about how they couldn’t believe that Nicki was able to book Nicki Minaj for that night.
“I’ll explain everything now,” she said. And she would have too, if Nicki hadn’t opened the door and told them that the four of them really needed to get some sleep if they were going to be able to function the next day.
“And I can hear y’all, so no talking or whispering. I want to hear snoring.” And with that Nicki left the room as quickly as she had come.
“I guess we have to go to sleep.” Demetria said.
“Go to sleep,” Nicki shouted from her room.
“We are,” Demetria shouted back. “’Night guys.” With that the four friends got settled in and went to sleep.
