He quirked his eyebrow at me. "Yeah. Uh, anyways, did I catch you staring at me?" I scoffed. "Pfft, please Park. Get over yourself. Seriously your ego is bigger then your house." I retaliated. He rolled his eyes. "That may be true. But you, and your friends I may add, were staring at me. Even Haley noticed something was off." It was my turn to roll my eyes. I stood, placing my hands on my hips. I didn't like how tall he stood over me when I sat. "Yeah, we were looking at you. We were trying to find your kindness but we didn't see anything." I crossed my arms and gave him my best glare. I thought I saw a smidge of hurt, but if I did he covered it up well. "Fine. Whatever." He dismissed us with a wave of his hand and walked away. I sat down.
"You are really harsh towards Park, you know that?" Rosie said. "What? No I'm not." I defended myself. "Opal, you are the kindest person I know. Probably top ten on the planet. But when you talk to Park, I don't know you." What she said struck my heart with truth. I put my face in my hands. "Gosh Rosie. You're right." She flipped her hair over her shoulder. ""Um, DUH. I'm always right." I narrowed my eyes while she died of laughter.
I approached Park in the halls, making sure his female entourage was not with him. "Hey, uh, Park?" I said his name like a question, rubbing my arm. He glanced at me, putting his last textbook into his locker. "Yeah?" No emotion showed in his voice. I set my sights on his shoes. I wasn't going to look into his eyes. "I, uh, um, wanted to, uh, apologize." I could feel his weird look. "For what?" He asked. "I haven't been... the nicest person to you." He chuckled. "Oh Opal that's fine. I know you. No matter how you act I know you're extremely kind." I swore all the blood in my body went to my cheeks when I looked at him after that statement. "Oh... Um, well I guess that's settled then. Later." I walked away before he could see me smile. "Oh, and Opal?" He called. I turned around. "My smile is lopsided. The right side goes up farther then the left." He smiled, and I saw he was telling the truth. "Oh! Cool, I... uh." And that's when I turned and ran for my life.
I tripped on my scramble away from Park, but someone caught me by my elbows. "Opal! I'm glad to catch you." I looked up as he set me upright, and saw Michael. "Oh! Hi! Uh, yeah I have to be... over there. Because I uh, because I have to." Even though I didn't want to I pushed him away and tried to run. "Wait! I wanted to ask you something." I stopped and slowly turned around. "Um, maybe not now." I responded. "Why not now?" My eyes went wide, then I saw Bea coming towards me down the hallway. "Because, you see..." Bea waved as she passed, and I silently apologized to her.
Because I stuck my foot out and completely made her face plant. "Holy mother of!!" She cried, not finishing her sentence. "Because my friend Bea here might have just broken her nose. Gotta go bye!!" I cried, grabbing her under her arms and dragging her away.
When she realized what was happening she began to thrash around. "OPAL YOU CRAZY PERSON!!!!!!! PUT ME DOWN!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?!" She beat her arms against my waist until I released her, sending her crashing onto her butt. "Okay, you're lucky my nose isn't broken." She got up. "Now what in the Lord's great name are you doing?!?!?!" She cried, stomping her foot. "I needed a get away. I'm sorry! I panicked! Please forgive me!" She scowled. "You're lucky I love you." I grinned broadly while she nailed me in the arm.
So, just when my life couldn't get harder, I had to make it harder. I had to go and nearly break my ankle. I severely sprained my ankle, and let me tell you, it sucks. I can't walk well, I can't get things for myself, I'm extremely slow, I have to sit for most of the day, and the strange thing is, it doesn't seem to be getting better.
It's probably because I keep trying to do things, get things for myself, do the stairs, because I still think I can. Which my mother informs me, I can't. But why don't we start from the beginning, huh?
Gym class, required for me to take. It was my first time dressing out, since it was second semester and I had health first semester. So we were doing karaoke. No, not singing, when you switch your legs back and forth between each other. Also called grapevines. Can't really explain it that well.
Anyways, literally my third warm-up of my whole gym career in high school, and I put pressure wrong on my left foot. Down on my butt I went, hearing a snap on my way down. I told myself I was fine, and got up to continue. But once I put pressure on it, lightening bolts of pain shot through my leg. I almost went back down.
I hobbled over to my coach. "Um, Coach Nells? I think I did something really bad to my ankle." She looked really surprised. "Oh! Well uh, sit against the wall for a second." I limped over and gently slid down the wall into a sitting position. I think I was in shock, because I didn't cry, but I was still trying not to hyperventilate. After a few more warmups she came over to me. "So, uh, know anyone in this class that can take you to the nurse?" I had a person somewhere between acquaintance and friend. "Yeah, uh, Mackenzie." She called her over and helped me up, sliding my arm over Mackenzie's shoulders. We have to go up stairs.
"Put as much weight on me as you need to." She said. I hopped on one foot up the stairs. "Thanks." I breathed. "At least you're not crying." She commented. I nodded. "At least I'm not crying."
She dropped me off at the nurse and left. The nurse, nurse Amanda, kept asking me a bunch of questions I couldn't answer. I've never broken a bone or fractured anything, so I didn't know the answers. Which was very frustrating for nurse Amanda. She eventually just ended up calling my mom. This was horrible.
