You quickly walk over to assist Dr. MiGook and Dr. Heosok as the patient's bleeding persisted. The rapid beeping of the cardiac monitor blurred your thinking.
"Dr. Heosok, please continue to suction. Dr. (L/N), please help me clamp this blood vessel. Gosh why is she suddenly bleeding so much?" Dr. MiGook hurriedly tries to find the origin of the bleeding and uses every method she knows of to prevent Ha Da Jung from bleeding to death.
"Please make sure we have enough blood available, nurse Lee."
"Dr. MiGook, the patient's having cardiac arrhythmia. She's going into tachycardia right now!" The Anesthesiologist alerted everyone.
"She's in cardiac arrest right now Dr. MiGook!" You reply in instinct.
"Push one of epi nurse Lee!"
A sudden squirt of blood squirts out from the patient's body. The surgery team scurries once again to find where all the bleeding was coming from.
"Her general abdominal organs are fine! Why is she still bleeding?" Wonho exclaims in the mist of chaos.
"Heosok, (Y/N), take a look at this real quick." The both of ya'll lean in and realize what Dr. MiGook was pointing at.
"It's Giant Cell Myocarditis. " Everyone turns their head in unison after hearing what Dr. Heosok had said.
"A very rare disease affecting predominately healthy adults. It causes heart failure and ventricular arrhythmia unless a cardiac transplantation is performed immediately. There's a .007% chance of getting it and there is no proven cure. What should we do? We have to find a way. She can't die now!" You look at Dr. MiGook in desperation but she never returned any relief.
"Her heart won't be able to manage any longer." Wonho says worriedly.
"All of the cardiac surgeons are in surgery. There is no heart available for us as of right now and it'll be too late even if there is one due to the roads main roads being blocked because of the accident. It'll take too long for the nearest heart transplantation hospital to even fly it to us." After Dr. MiGook finished what she was saying she finally looks up at you and Wonho with a pale expression.
"Time of death... " Dr. MiGook glances up at the clock.
"10:52" She hands her tools to the scrub nurse and turns to exit the OR room with Dr. Heosok following behind. The nurses begin cleaning up and detaching the wires from the patient. They turn off the heart monitors and disconnect the ventilator from the patients mouth. You slowly take off your blood stained gloves, gown, and mask, but then just stood by the expose bin in silence as everyone exits the surgery room, while you stand there in shock.
In the past 20 minutes, a mother of innocent children was taken away. You stood there shaking at the thought and an unexpected tear runs down your cheek. There was no use of holding the pain in. You drop to the floor and a gush of tears rush from your eyes. Your hands slowly pull your legs into your chest and you sit there with your head between your knees curled up into a ball in the corner of the OR room.
Unconsciously you repeat the diagnoses of the patient in your head. The throbbing pain of seeing someone die in your hands was unbearable. Every ounce of pain reminded you of the first day you were an intern. The same torture you felt after seeing someone die for the first time. It felt like a sharp knife had cut through your heart. Life ends so quickly and no one knows what the future holds. Death happens every second of the day but we will forever be unable to control it. All the power we think we have will just result to dust once we leave this world.
(Y/N) POV-------
How could a successful operation go wrong so quickly? How could a doctor give up so quickly. I ... I ... why? why did she have to have Giant Cell Myocarditis? Why is the world so cruel? (You sob, holding in the smile whimpers to avoid others from hearing)
Should I not have left the surgery room? Should I have stayed to help to make sure everything would be alright? It was my fault... I shouldn't have left to go... wait... the children...
-----------------
The children. You will be the one breaking the news to them. Do you have the strength to pull it together and tell Ha Do Young and Ha Shin Young that their mother, who was about to recover perfectly, has just died? Is this what the life of being a surgeon feels like?
