Strolling back down and into the ballroom, my eyes were glued onto Lockwood. He really stood out from the crowd with his taller structure and leaner build, and knowing him, that's a good thing. It was natural for him to be not in the spotlight.
Just as I was a few feet away, he noticed my presence and excused himself from the man he was talking to.
"Nyssa, how nice of you to see you here." He said with a smile on his face.
"Nice to see you too, Lockwood." I said, seeing a bit of annoyance in his eyes because I still refer to him by his last name.
His eyes averted from me to whoever was behind me." And who may be the person behind you?"
I looked at Lockwood confused before turning around to see who it was, and of course, it couldn't really be anyone else but Vanoss.
"Oh no, he's not—"
"—I'm Evan." Vanoss said, interrupting." Please to meet you Mr. Lockwood." He stated, holding out his hand like the gentleman he is. Note the sarcasm. Vanoss snaked his hand around my waist and pulled me closer to him, making me even more confused. I pulled away slightly, but the grip on my hip was a warning to not fight back.
Lockwood shook his hand firmly." Likewise." Was all he said, narrowing his eyes at Vanoss before looking back to me." Well I'll have to excuse myself. I—"
"—Actually, I needed to talk to you about something. In private." I said, remembering Vanoss was still here.
"Sorry Nyssa, that's gonna have to wait since I have to be here and speak to some other guests. I am the host after all."
I barely managed to not roll my eyes."...That's fine." I gritted while smiling at him.
"Very well, I'll see you later." He spoke before leaving.
Once his back turned towards us, I shoved Vanoss away and glowered at him. He sent the glare right back, but I noticed a bit of regret floating around in his eyes from doing so. I sighed before looking down for a brief moment, breaking the stare-down.
"—Vanoss,"
"—Nyssa,"
The both of us said simultaneously. We stayed silent before he gestured towards me to speak first. My mouth opened to say something, but I really didn't know what to say. This was probably one of the few times in my life I had trouble finding words. My mind just kept screaming about what to say, but I didn't listen nor did I obliged to it.
It was obvious to Vanoss so he just decided to speak first," How do you know him?" He asked, acting like nothing happened before.
"Because I do." I mumbled, not wanting to tell him anything along the line of personal." So are you gonna tell me why you pretended to be my plus one?" I asked, crossing my arms over my chest.
He laughed nervously," Just to not look suspicious." He said sheepishly, scratching the back of his neck.
By reflex, a laugh escaped from my mouth, which was apparently funny enough to put a smile onto his face. It was only there for a second long, but it was long enough for the image to be stuck in my mind.
Deciding to play along, I told him," Well, from my point of view, I think you could do a lot better."
"If I need some improvement, then I can keep you company for the rest of the night." He suggested. It was more of a one-sided suggestion, meaning that I really had no choice but to agree.
