Chapter One: The Last One's Standing
***
We were down by one point. I was dripping with sweat and half of our A team was hurt. The boys in the stands were cheering us on but it made us even more nervous.
We walked over to the bench, "Please, put Katelyn in! We need her on wing!", I whined.
"She has four fouls!", Coach Meghan said.
"It is the last quarter, come on coach we can do this!", I exclaimed. We were all tired and frustrated. The whole game we were either tied or down by one.
The coach nodded and Katelyn jumped up from the bench. "Thanks girl.", Katelyn said patting me on the back. I nodded an we ran onto the court. We set up a 2-3 defense and they got out of there huddle. I was a forward, because I was tall and built. The girl that I was covering stunk like BO and I was going to throw up on her. But I kept it in and got down. The point guard shot a 3 when nobody was on her, I started to scream at Katelyn because that was her girl. But she missed and I got my butt into Ms. BO. I got the rebound and did a triple threat.
Having a fast break, I ran toward the opposite basket, doing an easy lay up. The crowd went wild, Daniel the most wild one. We had 38 seconds left on the clock and they could easily score.
"Hustle and get to your positions!", I screamed as I ran to my position. We could do this, we had to get our heads in the game the last minute.
Coach screamed, "GET YOUR HANDS UP!"
We all flung out our hands, covering their main shooter. She broke the first girl's ankles, trying to get through our defenses. It was up to Katelyn and I, the last one's standing. She did a fake shot, and I got up all in her grill (grill is a word for face, lol). She passed to the bottom, leaving her clear for a shot. Katelyn ran up and blocked the shot. I grabbed it and threw it down to Burke (A.K.A Katelyn) who was already bolting to toward the basket. She got a grip on it and went up for a layup.
When we thought she successfully made it, one of the other girls yanked onto her arm, pulling her down and crushing her.
"KATELYN!", I screamed and sprint down to her. I peeled the girl off of her and pushed her away.
"Katelyn, what happened?", I asked worringly and crouched down beside her.
"M-M-My arm, I can't feel it....", she said trying to breathe between sobs.
Her arm was bent backwards and I knew it was broken. I said, "Hey, take some deep breaths." The crowd yelled and I looked down at the court, the other team got past our defense and scored. I was furious, I was going to scream my head off. I started to walk over to the ref. I stood in front of him and he finally made eye contact with me.
"What?", he questioned me.
"We had an injured teammate down on the court and you wouldn't stop the game? What the heck?", I complained.
"Are you the speaking captain?", he protested.
"Yes I am.", I said back in the same tone.
"The game was still continued because we didn't see what happened.", he said again.
"THAT WAS A COMPLETE FOUL AND SHE SHOULD GET A TECHNICAL", I screamed.
"If you don't want a technical, I would advise you to keep your mouth shut!", he said as he walked away. I rolled my eyes and went back to Katelyn. Coach rushed over and so did Ethan.
