"Charli!"
My attention perked up as my name was called. My best friend, Sasha Perks, was running towards me, holding a yellow slip of paper in her hand.
"Jesus Christ, Sash, what's up?" I laughed, watching her pant and struggle to catch her breath once she was beside me.
"You remember how I applied to ECU?" She beamed, referring to the bazillion times she'd mentioned university.
"I think I recall," I replied with sarcasm laced in my voice.
"They accepted me! I'm going to ECU!" She squealed, earning several strange looks from the lower grades.
"I'm so proud of you!" I pulled her into a friendly hug, knowing we didn't do it very often. "Look, I'd love to chat, but I have to go get something from the office for my mum."
We shared our goodbyes before parting ways.
My mum wanted to put my brother into boarding school since he was failing here. I didn't blame him. Things hadn't been easy on my family.
Blake, my brother, was only in his second year of high school. Things were fine last year, but one tragic event changes some people.
My grade suffered slightly too, so my English teacher signed me up with a tutor. We hadn't studied together yet, but that was coming up soon.
As I stepped foot in the office, I noticed the bloody face of two students.
"He started it!" One kid yelled, as if he was back in year 5.
The school nurses cleaned one of them as the principal began ringing parents, I presume.
"May I help?"
I turned around to see the office lady there. I composed myself before asking for the papers of resignation.
She quietly handed them over before assisting the nurse.
I didn't understand how our school could become like this. Sure, there were a few fights a term, but the ones lately have gotten out of hand.
I walked past one of the classrooms where my ex, Dylan Jenkins, was talking to his teacher. He caught sight of my, raising his hand in a small wave gestures.
I returned it, smiling slightly. I didn't hate him. Not even close. We broke up for the best. Not because he cheated, or he didn't spend enough time with me, but because we both thought we were better off as friends. Things are great between us and I know we did make the right choice.
Hearing the first bell go, I turned left and headed down until I reached my first class. This was the only class I had without Sasha and it was unfortunately, first up on a Monday morning. Art.
I was no Da Vinci, but I could draw and paint fairly well. I loved the way the pencil glided down the page in easy strokes. I knew I was in love with drawing when my mum handed me my first pack of crayons.
I went to the back of the class, fishing for my painting from the stack of them. I was working on a space setting where it blended down into a beach. Two things I loved. Night time, and the beach.
I'd finished most off it, only needing to paint the stars. Ten weeks was how long I'd been working on it and I'm glad it's turned out okay.
