> Prologue <

Darkness. Black. An empty, dark abyss void of anything. That was all I saw. I was straining to see something beside the darkness that seemed to stretch on forever. Forever, that was a tremendously long time and I hoped I wasn't here that long.

I wondered how much time had passed? Time just seemed to stretch on forever, just like the darkness. Time was no longer of the essence, no longer going to help me out of this.

Something caught my attention out of the corner of my eye. Turning to face it, it was an image of something. I focused all my attention on it and it came into view.

The image showed a newborn baby being cradled in its mother's arms, close to her chest. The mother started humming a soft tune as she gently rocked the baby from side to side. After a few moments, the baby quieted down and stopped crying.

Its little eyes fluttered open for the first time, revealing a set of innocent grey eyes. It looked up at its mother, who was looking down at the baby with such love in her eyes. The baby's eyes started scanning the room taking in everything around it. The doctor smiling proudly down at her work, the father craddling something else in a bundle of blankets, and the nurses who were cooing to the baby. Then, the baby's eyes stopped on me, as if it knew I was watching. Locking eyes with it, those eyes looked all too familiar.

That's when it clicked that baby was me! The memory was the very first memory I had of the new, strange world.

The memory faded, but was quickly replaced by another. I watched as a little baby struggled to walk. It was gripping the edge of a table for support as it took its first steps. Its little, delicate hands released the table it was grasping and turned its head to look at a woman, my mum. I watched my tiny self take one step towards my mum and tumbling over landing on my bum. My mum chuckled, but kept encouraging me over.

So, I went back over to the table and tried again. As soon as I let go of the table, I fell again. I ended up trying multiple times to walk, but falling every time. Boy, was I ever a determined little bundle of joy.

I never ended up making it over to my mum, who was encouraging me the whole time I kept trying. I only stopped when my mum scooped me up into her arms and I started to cry. She started humming the tune that she had first hummed to me when I was born. While swaying me from side to side to the rhythmn of the tune. My big grey eyes turned to look at her and I reached up playing with a strand of hair that had fallen out of place from being tucked behind her ear. My mum looked at me with such admiration, those were precious moments for her that she will treasure.

The image faded away, just as the first had done. Another image instantly filled its place, with a string of other images following in pursuit after the last.

The images were highlights of my life. Continuing on from my first moments and first steps. My first birthday. My first attempt at dancing. My first day at school. My first time strumming away at a guitar. My first mate. My first boyfriend. My first kiss. My first fight. My first party. My first break-up.

The images appeared in front of me, like watching a black and white movie of my entire life story. The last image played itself out and faded away into the darkness, just like the rest. The darkness instantly filled the space where the images had occupied. Once again, I was alone in the eerie darkness.

Why had my whole life just unraveled before me? More importantly, where was I? I took my surroundings in once again, although there was nothing except the pitch black. Your life story does not just unfold before you, unless...

The truth hit me with such force. I felt as though a massive, one-thousand pound weight had just collapsed on top of me.

I was dead.
