"Humph," I grunted as the hatchet came in contact with the Walker's skull. It wasn't a threat. I mean, it wasn't even a walker; it was more like a crawler. It was bone thin and any human that skinny would be dead.

"But it's not human" I reminded myself.

I sighed. I'm not a killer. It was more of a pity kill. I couldn't stand to watch that crawler drag itself about; no purpose and no reason to be in this world.

And I continued my journey along the mountain road.

Soon the whirring of a car engine reached my ears.

Oh sh...

Humans are bad news. I've learned that first-hand.

I had to choose; I could either stand out n the open, or hide.

I looked back at the truck. Hide it is.

I jumped down to the grass on the side of the road.

"Awh, gross." I whispered to myself. I landed next to a walker with her head bashed in. I ignored the smell of the rotted carcass next to me. I was hoping to hear the truck whizz by, but instead I heard its tires skid to a stop.

"Hey, I don't know if you're smart to hide or a total idiot, but I can see you." The guy in the truck chuckled. I stood up next to the passenger side window, which was rolled down. The guy inside had brown, messy, curly hair and a tattered plaid shirt that was only half-way buttoned. A few tattoos peeked out, but I didn't pay much attention to them. "So Ray, what are you doing all by yourself on the open road?"

I was taken aback. "How do you know my name?"

"Well I would assume that is your name on that backpack." I looked down at the strap that stretched across my front side that said "Ray" in embroidered letters. "Unless you're a thief or somethin'. I don't really feel like messin' with that kind of person."

I sighed, "No, I'm Ray."

"Well, Ray. Need a ride somewhere?"

"No, man. I'm just making my way towards Atlanta."

"Oh well, I could really use some company," he said. "And Atlanta is kind of up the road a ways..."

I took a minute to think then muttered, "Screw it." And I got in the truck.

"The name's Harry if you were wondering." Huh, cooooool. I let the time pass with silence.

"So you seem kind of down. You leave a boy or something?"

"Or something..." I responded, thinking about my journey.

"Well I haven't a proper fling yet in a while if you know what I mean. Whaddaya think of her, huh?"

"Wha-" I was interrupted by the clambering of a female walker reaching for me through my open window.

"Well, what do you think? She was probably really hot before she, you know, died and all." He pulled out a gun and pointed it at her face from across my lap. I was expecting to hear a boom, but there was only a click. "Shit." He said and hit the pedal to the floor.

"WHAT THE HELL, MAN!?" I screamed, almost in tears. "WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?"

"I'm sorry! I didn't know the barrel was empty!" He yelled desperately. "And I'd never let anything happen to you, Ray." He whispered.

I snapped my head towards him. "What?"

"N-nothing." He stuttered. Another awkward silence passed before he said, "I'm sorry...f-for being a dick. I just haven't had any company since I lost my group." He said while scratching the back of his neck. I ignored him a little more. It's hard to trust people in this world, and his first impression was not the best.

Soon enough, we pulled into a gas station/diner thing.

"We need to get any gas we can." Harry said. I nodded and started to open my door, but not before I heard shots being fired.

"DUCK!" Harry yelled. I put my hand over my head and scooted closer to Harry. "We have to get out," He opened his door and we got on the side that blocked us from the shots. "Okay we have to get over there," harry pointed "where the shots can't reach us. We'll have to push the truck as a shield." He got inside the truck for a second. "It's in neutral." I positioned my right hand under the truck near the rear tire, and my left hand on the outside. "Okay, 1...2...3...PUSH!"I pushed as hard as I could, and the truck started to move.

"This guy must have endless ammo or something." I rolled my eyes. We grunted and groaned until we were almost there, but the shooter shot out the front tire.

"Crap, crap, crap. We'll have to make a run for it."

"What!? No, that's crazy."

"Listen! Ray. We need to get out of his range. I will cover you and you won't get hurt. Trust me." I looked into his eyes. "Trust me, Ray." The words rang in my ears as I inhaled deeply, closing my eyes. When they fluttered back open, I had made my decision.

I sighed, "Okay."

"Ready?" I nodded. "Ready, set, GO!" and we were running as fast as possible. He put an arm around my shoulders as we ran. We reached the wall that could protect us, and Harry slid his back down the wall grabbing his shoulder and hissing.

"Let me look...." I said and pulled his shirt to see the wound. A bullet had grazed his skin. "Only a flesh wound." I chuckled nervously. "Harry we gotta clean this up. Do you have a first aid kit?"

"Don't worry about this now." He snapped. "I'm sorry, Ray. I'd just rather focus on catching the mother-"he stopped himself and blushed, "Sorry."

"So what are we going to do now?"

"Well we're going to go inside." He smirked.

"WHAT!? You're insane!" I yelled and he covered my mouth with his large hand.

"Shhshh." He whispered soothingly. I said sorry with my eyes. "We're going inside to find out who the hell was trying to kill us." Harry took a minute to gather his strength before we crawled around the corner to a backdoor. He opening it slowly and looked back at me, putting a single finger to his lips signaling "quiet." I nodded and we moved on, crouched down near the floor. We crawled along a counter.

"Can you please, please take a peek over the counter?" My eyes widened.

"No! They'll see me!"

"No they won't." He promised, and for some stupid reason I believed him. "I just need to know if he's alone or not." I let out a sigh and nodded, which I seemed to being a lot of lately. I gripped the cool counter over my head and pulled myself high enough to see who was near the front windows.

"There are 2 guys. They look pretty young, like 20." I reported. "And they're pretty buff." I added.

"Okay," he said. "Which one do you want?"

"What do you mean?"

"Which one do you want to attack? I'll get the other."

"Oh. Uh. I'll take the shorter one."

"Okay. Sneak up or jump out?"

"Uh, jump. But I'd rather not do anything at all."

"Don't be a wuss." He laughed. We crawled to the open door. "One...two...THREE!" He yelled and I jumped on the back of a boy with jet-black hair.

"AGH!" He cried out along with his friend that Harry was now on top of.

I got the boy to the floor and I looked to Harry, but he was busy staring into the other boy's eyes. I got the feeling that Harry recognized him...

Great.
