When Newt woke up he found myself, Dolly and Morgan by his side. After an hour we left to give Newt and a still very emotional Dolly to come to terms with what happened. It felt surreal that Newt had woken up, part of me expected him to follow the footsteps of his brother. Another knife fight. Another stab wound, but Newt was here and his brother was not. Morgan still said nothing about the black haired man, he had saw him and together they had been in his car and killed someone or something. When we got to my house I asked Morgan if he was hungry,
"Emily I have to go take care of something first."
"Well that's nice, you going to tell me what it is?"
"No."
I knew he wouldn't tell me but I think he knew I knew where he was going. He was going to see the black haired man.
"Okay I'm really to tired to fight so you do whatever you want I'm going for a nap."
He didn't follow me, he didn't answer, he just left. I went into my bedroom. I picked up clothes that were on the floor and I put them in the wash basket I kept in the bathroom. When I got back to my bedroom I saw a rose on my bed which wasn't there when I was in here literally five seconds ago, there was a note underneath simply saying "awake." When I picked it up I saw who left it: the black haired man. I ran to my phone which was left downstairs and rang Morgan, he picked up on the second ring,
"Emily?"
"Morgan! He was here!"
"Who?"
"The black haired man! He was here!"
I heard him take a swift turn in his car,
"Emily I'm coming okay. Stay calm."
I didn't feel like I should a man I don't know broke into my house. Morgan hung up the phone and I sat in the kitchen, he arrived five minutes after he hung up which means he wasn't far from the house.
"Emily!"
He hugged me which took me by surprise but I responded and led him to the bedroom to show him what was left. He picked the note up, read it, looked at me, looked at the rose, and then back at the note.
"Maybe you and I should have a chat Morgan."
He nodded and for the first time in a long time I felt like he was normal I felt the warm glow inside me again but this time it felt natural. He brought the rose and note downstairs and put them in the middle of the kitchen table while I got myself a glass of water and made him a cup of tea. We sat looking at each other for what seemed like forever.
"who is he Morgan?"
At first he looked like he wouldn't answer me but he did.
"He is my brother."
"Like a literal brother or a fallen?"
"Literal."
Silence followed as my mind raced. Why wasn't I told this before? What was he doing in my house? Why was he at the hospital? I knew he could read my mind because of the look on his face.
"Okay Emily. I didn't tell you because I didn't want you to know about him, he is my brother, in terms of what I do he is like my second hand. I don't know why he came to your house and I don't know why he was at the hospital. Believe me I plan to find out."
"Does he know about...about."
I looked down to the small bump I had, I was only four months but I looked much bigger. I put that down to Morgan's real identity. When I looked back at Morgan he nodded but looked like the whole world was on his shoulders.
"What? What is it?"
"Well let's just say he wasn't really happy about it but he is as curious as I am to what comes out."
He was a poet. Really he was. He knows just what to say.
"What comes out...charming."
"You know what I mean Emily."
He drank his tea and stood up to get his phone of the side.
"What's his name?"
He looked at me and I could see his mind jogging, he and his brother must have to keep changing their name as time goes on.
"David."
He dialled him on the phone and as quickly as he dialled it, he hung up.
"Hello brother."
I jumped as David's voice sounded behind me. David moved to the chair next to me and sat down as if he had been coming here for years. Morgan's face was one of utter disbelief, David threw his long arm around the back of his seat with his eyes moving between myself and Morgan.
"What are you doing?"
Morgan finally said as he gestured to the rose and note. David just tipped his head to the side and let out a sigh,
"I don't feel like I owe you any kind of explanation, dear brother."
Morgan tensed up and the air suddenly felt suffocating and dense. I felt David's dark eyes burn into my skull and suddenly all I could see what the death of the blonde haired man and David's voice repeating "you really want to be with him?" It was like a bad dream I couldn't wake up from and then I felt like I was falling, falling from the greatest height possible. It felt just like when I saw Morgan fall but this time the ground wasn't opening up for me. I had to regain control, David was doing this. I felt all the air flee from my lungs, but I tried to push my mind back to reality. Morgan grabbed my arms and gently pulled me from my chair, he lifted me up and moved me to the living room putting a safe distance between myself and his brother. My breathing started to become easy again, I was back to being fully aware. I looked back to the kitchen and saw Morgan and David fighting but it seemed like no matter how hard they hit each other neither got hurt. As soon as they started fighting they stopped.
"You are becoming soft my dear brother." David said quite flatly making a statement, at that comment I saw Morgan's back hunch up and he growled.
He literally growled.
Like an animal.
I've never heard such an animalistic noise come from a person...then again Morgan isn't a person he is much more than that. David laughed at Morgan. It was vile to see.
"Oh dear brother, is she the reason you've become so soft?" David pointed at me and I felt a deep pull inside me, it was like I was being forced back into the kitchen. David walked towards me and as much as I wanted to I couldn't pull away. Around Morgan I sometimes get a warm feeling coming over me but with David all I felt was a growing feeling of coldness. So cold it felt like a thousand tiny knife pricks within me. It was unnatural but I couldn't stop it.
"She is pretty for a worthless human. You fell because you felt pushed out by these beings and now you have settled down with one." He laughed again as he stroked my face with the back of his hand.
"Get your hands off her David!" As Morgan came closer to us David lifted his hand to Morgan and seemingly forced him back,
"When will you learn its her kinds fault we are down here!" He put his hand on my small bump, "Their fault, and you do this." He looked me dead in the face and said "I look forward to seeing what comes out of you, I'm sure you are too but it will probably kill you." He kissed my cheek and left.
Morgan basically ran to me and gave me a hug, I wasn't upset or angry or sad so I don't know why he felt the need to hug me but whatever.
"I'm going to have a bath Morgan."
I forced myself away from him but when I was walking up the stairs he just looked lost. In that moment he looked completely human and I couldn't stand it. He wasn't human, in fact he was the Devil, I felt betrayed by my own eyes and I hated that. As I got to the bathroom I locked the door and just broke down in tears. I was consumed with this empty feeling left by David but caused by Morgan.
"Emily...emily please let me in."
"I'm fine just leave me alone...please."
"Look what happens when I do leave you alone Emily!"
Clearly referring to David but I sat with my back against the door, my body physically refusing to stand up and let him in.
"Emily?" Emily why have you gone quiet?"
He knows why. I couldn't seem to get control of my mouth to reply. I couldn't even bring myself to whimper instead I sat on my bathroom floor crying silently. I knew he had the skill to appear where he wants so not to left me believing that although he refuses to leave from the landing he also refuses to enter this is him giving me peace, giving me space. I heard him slide down the door matching my position,
"Emily I'm sorry."
This time I made myself reply.
"You brought your shit to my home. I didn't even bring my own shit home. For years I lay on Newt's floor refusing to taint this house...but you changed that. I brought you here...is this my fault?"
"No Emily. It's mine. It's who I am. He made it so I can't be happy...I made it so I can't be happy."
He paused for two minutes.
"I found something in you. You, no matter what, have made me happy. You accepted who I am. You're even carrying my child. Please open the door."
At that moment I realised that I needed him. I loved him. I opened the door and he placed me into his arms once more. I touched his arms and saw every thought he ever had about me. I saw our first meeting when all he cared about was the sinner and how after that first night something re sparked his heart, he began to care even when he knew he shouldn't because it was against his nature. I saw how he missed me when I was not around or every time he left me he craved to be back. I saw how scared he was when I called freaking out. In seeing it I knew I was awake. Awake to how he felt about me and how I felt about him. No matter the unconventionality of our relationship it was the best I had ever had.
