The city was pretty, in a I-survived-four-wars-and-have-major-PTSD-but-I-survived kind of way.
Ry's home town couldn't compete with the vastness of Chicago, but Madison was a whole lot cleaner.
He'd found the Capitol building no problem, but the security was insane. A signal file line was the only way in, it was slowly passing through the gates, each person getting searched, and each person was younger than twelve. The kids.
Ry scanned the crowd but no luck. Luke wasn't there. He either hadn't gotten there yet, or had already gone through. After a quick glance of the surrounding buildings, Ry made his choice and slipped through a couple alleys, taking himself right to an old office building with a good view of the gates. And the he waited.
It took two truck loads of children, but there they were, all three had stuck together, two small blond heads, bobbing their through the line, accompanied by a head of dark brown.
Just when he saw them his watch went off. He cursed, Tris would be back in the sewer in twenty minutes, he needed to hurry.
Ry stumbled down the dark steps leading him towards the bottom floor. Each step was worn and smooth.
In the darkness of the abandoned building, it was easy to get turned around, or for you to trip on unseen dangers. He was almost at the bottom when he tripped. His feet slid out from under him and one of his toes caught on a random board. The clangs of his body hitting the stairs on the way down resonated through the stairwell. He tried to stop him self but didn't mange it until he slammed into a wall.
Groaning with the pain of a hundred bruises and thankful for the lacking of a broken neck, Ry could barly bring himself to move.
Then the shouting started. Shit, shit shit. Ry threw himself up and hurtled down the stairs, pausing only briefly at the bottom to look for Factionless. He bolted for the sewer but froze half way and returned to the doorway at full speed. A team of men and women, maybe ten in all were making their way towards him.
"I don't care if Evelyn wants the kids loaded first. This could be Allegiant."
A higher, breathy voice answered the deep professional one.
"Her orders where to stay with kids, make sure they know their safe. And what do you do? You charge off at the first little thing."
"I'd say it more like a two hundred fifteen pound human. Probably human, calling down a flight of stairs. Not actually all that little." This was a third voice, deep, and dam he was smart, though Ry was actually two hundred and five pounds.
"Shut up." The first voice, the professional one. "That's the building we heard it from. Josie, Harold take lead."
Ry scrambled backwards into a corner, hopping that in darkness he'd be safe.
Two figures came through the door. A tall woman and tall man, both with guns and crap flashlights. "All clear here!" Josie, must have been.
"Same." Shouted Harold. As one the duo moved up the stairs.
"Marlin and I next. Zeke is in charge now." Called the professional.
A large frame filled the doorway for a split second before it moved into the room, followed by a slimmer but equally tall one.
In his corner Ry didn't breath. It was all over now. There was no way he'd survive five sweeps of this room.
Ry froze light a deer in the headlights. The slim one's light had landed on him. It moved on rapidly, and it's owner approached.
"Clear!" The professional was the slim one. "Same" yelled the burly guy.
Outside Zeke yelled for the next team. The second team stay where they were, the slim professional in front of me, blocking his view as the third team moved up the stairs. When they'd heard clear from above the fourth team came in, following the others up the stairs.
Ry's chest was aching for breath, forcing him to breath through his nose. The slim professional's shoulders tensed a bit, Ry got the message. Breath quieter, please!
Finally the fifth team went up, leaving the burly one and the professional guarding me and the door.
After several minutes of nothing Ry heard a chorus of "clear"s. Then came the clamour, like a hundred drunk elephants tap dancing down the stairs.
"No one saw him? How!?!" Demanded a female voice, probably Josie.
"Probably jumped to another building or ran out before we got here." Stated the professional. "Everyone split up, look for anyone who doesn't belong. Ignore Josie, we have no idea if it's male or female."
The professional left, tailed closet by the rest, leaving Ry alone. He waited what must have been a half hour before moving, he was so late for the meeting, all he could do now was get away from here and try to locate Trace.
He hadn't gone twenty feet in when he heard the click of a bullet getting chambered.
