Half an hour late, it was a first. When Ry gave a time limit he kept it.
"Hey, Christina?"
"Yep?"
"He's late."
Christina rolled her eyes. "I figured that out. How long til we give up? This sewer smells."
Tris glared at her friend who was leaning idly against the wall. "My olfactory system works just fine, Chris. I know it smells."
"I notice you avoided my question, Tris. How long before we give up?
" Twenty more minutes. Then you head back to Dautless and spread the word."
"Right, I have a nice family dinner while you search the city for Allegiant. It's been years, Tris, Allegiant may no longer exist."
"We don't know that."
"We don't not know that." Christina shot back.
"You give up if you want to. I still have hope for Ry."
Christina just stared at Tris for a long moment. "I don't want to give up Tris, but I can't not. When I saw you earlier you planted a seed of hope that is dieing with every second I spend down here."
"Don't let it. Ry-"
"And who the hell is Ry anyway? Your baby daddy?"
That earned a groaned. "No, I told you, the father isn't in the picture. Ry's a good friend. We met in the hospital. His wife had died giving birth and his son had to stay in the hospital for a weeks, I'd just been realised from my room and was visiting the nursery when we met."
"Are tour kids close?"
"Yeah. Best friends. Natalie has two big brothers."
Christina laughed. "How will that go over when she reaches puberty?"
Tris chuckled. "Not well, both are insanly protective."
Chris was about respond when Tris's watch beeped. "Times up?" Tris nodded. "Well then, lets go."
"What? I already told you. I'm looking for Allegiant."
"Yeah, I know. And I'm coming with you."
"You don't have to, you really shouldn't. We'll need Dautless. We need you to stir up rebellion."
"Rebellion? Tris, what are you taking about? We're just getting your kids back."
"No, we're not. The Faction system was flawed, but this dictatorship is worse. I'm not leaving until the war is over."
Christina stepped toward Tris and folded her arms across her chest. "Your kids though."
"Ry with get them out, but I can't leave without cleaning up the mess I helped make."
"We all had a hand in that, Tris and as long as you need me, I'll be right beside you." Tris didn't know what to say, she'd killed Christina's boyfriend, then stared a civil war.
Tris' thoughts were interrupted by foot steps coming down the tunnel. "Hide" Tris hissed.
Both duck around a corner and waited, barly daring to breath.
"I swear, it's really her." The voice was distorted by the echoing stone, Tris couldnt quiet make out the voice.
"I don't doubt you think it's her, but I have my doubts about whether or not we are talking about the same person." A different voice, less distorted now by the closer proximity, and vaguely familiar.
"Don't be so down. I know for a fact we are think about the same person." The first voice, clearer.
"The Tris I knew wouldn't have ran away, she was more Dautless then anyone else." Her head shot up. This was someone I'd known, and now that she could make out the voice almost perfectly, she knew it was male, they both were.
Shit
Tris was about to run down her new tunnel when Christina's eyes went huge. Christina leaped up and bolted for the voices, Tris tried to stop her, but the charging girl slipped through her fingers.
Tris hunched over, frozen with fear when she heard the scream..
DUUUUUN DUUUUUUUN DAAAAAAAAAAAAA

"ZEKE!" Every one of Tris's nerves relaxed.
Calmer now, Tris stood and brushed off her pants. Around the corner she heard Chris and Zeke jabbering on.
"Can you believe she's back!?!"
"And from outside the wall!"
"Imagine CALEB'S reaction!"
"Please, Tina, imagine Evelyn's expression! She'll have a cow!"
"If that's Eve's reaction what will Four's be?" Tris decided that was her que.
"We won't find out, Chris, until we have what I want." Tris was careful not to say what she wanted, she had liked Zeke, but he'd been close to Four, might still be.
"Tris?" That was all she heard before huge arms wrapped around her.
"Hey Zeke. I've missed you." She hugged him back when she realized just how true her words were.
"Um, guys? Still here, and Zeke, unless you want me telling Shauna about how long you held another woman, I'd let go."
"Gota ruin the moment, don't you Christina." Zeke let go, but didn't step away.
"Hey, Zeke? I'm glad to see you and all, but how'd you meet Ry?" Tris turned and glared at her friend, aka the first voice that had echoed down the tunnel.
"See funny thing. I'd just found it and was heading back when I tripped down a flight of stairs and alerted a patrol."
"Idiot" Tris cut in.
"Yeah yeah, clutzy fool, blah blah blah. Any way, they got there just as I was leaving the building. I hid in a corner and then this guy found me, but didn't give me away. Once the the building was cleared and they'd left I made it to a manhole. Then this guy pulled a gun on me, wanting to know who I was. I didn't tell him my name but mentioned that I wanted my kid back. He said he knew I wasn't Amity, the whole conversation sorta just rolled on from there til I mention I knew you."
"Then he lead me here." Finished Zeke cause it looked like Ry was about to pass out.
"OK, but why were you in the sewer?" Chris asked.
"The guy who hid Ry in that building, that was Four. He asked me to stay behind and scout the allies. I noticed the manhole wasn't covered right so I went in. I was just heading up when this guy gave me a heart attack."
Ry shrugged. "You should've been watching your surroundings, who doesn't?"
Chris raised her hand, after a second so did Zeke. "Really?" Tris laughed.
"These people need work. Can I start with you, beauty? First lesson's free." Ry winked at Christina.
"Yeah sure, right after I swim in the marsh with salt rubbed into paper cuts across my vag-"
"Chris, he gets it." Tris cut in, not wanting Christina to finish that sentence.
