Ronnie sat, staring intently at the pile of unfinished sketches sitting on the table in front of her. There was nothing special about the sketches, as far as I could tell. She just seemed sort of entranced by them. Perhaps she was just lost in thought. She often did that. After about a minute, Ronnie looked up and glanced at me, her forest green eyes twinkling and a smirk playing at her lips. "So this is why I haven't been over in so long. You were too busy moving your new boyfriend in." She teased in mock anger.
"Chanyeol," I corrected. "His name is Chanyeol." A smile played at my own lips. I had sent my giant of a boyfriend out to go buy food. Not because I was hungry, but because I wanted to hear what my best friend thought. Her opinion was the most important to me, after all. "You know good and well that you haven't been over here because you were too busy with Kyungsoo, not because of what I was doing," I pointed out. Ronnie laughed, but didn't deny anything.
I walked over and sat next to her on the couch. Silence settled over the apartment and I stared at her pointedly, waiting for her to say something. She was never this quiet when it came to meeting my other boyfriends. I finally had to resort to nudging her shoulder in an effort to get her to talk. "What?" Ronnie tilted her head and raised her eyebrow.
"Tell me what you think of him," I pleaded, "of Yeol." Ronnie chuckled nervously. When she felt a certain way, I noticed that she would refuse to make any sort of eye contact. Her gaze went from ceiling to floor and everywhere in between, but never at your face. Right now she wasn't making eye contact. "Ronnie.."
"I think he's great," she said. Her mouth lifted into a smile and she turned to look at me, her silver hair slightly coming loose from the low ponytail she had tied back just minutes before. Something was off in the way she spoke, like she wanted to say something else. Instead, she simply smiled as if she wasn't holding anything back.
"Do you?"
"Yes." Ronnie picked up one of my drawings, the portrait I had half finished of Chanyeol laying on the couch with his long legs thrown over the armrest, his headphones in. He was asleep when I drew it, and his usual chatter ceased. I put it away when he woke up, thinking I would finish it later. I never got back to it, and now it was sitting in the unfinished pile with all of my other sketches. Most of my work lately hasn't gotten finished. Ronnie studied the drawing, her eyes flickering over the various rough and soft lines I had used. Her gaze moved from the drawing to my face. "Does he make you happy?"
"He makes me happy." I answered, smiling to myself. "He's a total dork, but he makes me incredibly happy. I'm sure I'm in love with him."
Ronnie chuckled. "Seeing as how you've already moved in together, I would say that you're in love with him." She stood up and walked to the refrigerator, probably to look for something to drink. "I just have one question," she called out from behind the fridge door.
"Hm?" I watched as she walked back over, water bottle in hand, and sat down at the kitchen table.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner? I mean, he's moved in and you're just now telling me." She chuckled to herself and I couldn't help but think I had hurt her feelings by not telling her until now.
I frowned. "I'm sorry. I just, I didn't think he'd be around this long. We don't really have the same personalities, if you couldn't tell." Ronnie made a sound somewhere between a laugh and a snort while taking a drink from her water bottle. She could tell, apparently. "But," I continued, "opposites attract, I guess."
"I guess so," she murmured. I raised my eyebrow at her and opened my mouth to retort, but the click of the door unlocking and swinging open interrupted me. Chanyeol was home.
"I'm back," he called, his deep voice reverberating off of the apartment walls. He stumbled in, almost dropping the three sweet teas he held in his arms. In his hand, he had a McDonald's bag filled with the french fries I requested before he left. "I brought drinks." Ronnie jumped up, just as I knew she would, and took one of the cups from him. She loved sweet tea even more than she loved Kyungsoo, so I was hoping it would score extra points for Yeol.
I walked over to my giant, took the food and drinks from his arms and I kissed his cheek. Being that I was only about 5'3 and he was about a foot taller than me, I had to get on my tiptoes just to reach him. I slightly lost my balance and he put his hand around my waist, steadying me. A chuckle rumbled through Chanyeol's chest and he smirked. "You okay?"
Ignoring my increasing heart rate, I rolled my eyes. "I'm okay. Thanks for getting the drinks, by the way." He nodded, a smile still plastered on his face. I turned around to face Ronnie, who was shaking her head. "What?" I questioned, defensively.
"I'm going to puke." Chanyeol raised his eyebrows in shock. She was being sarcastic, but he didn't seem to catch on.
"Do you need a trash can? Was it the tea? Do you need medicine?" Concern filled his voice and he looked from her to me.
"Yeol, it's okay. She was only kidding." I laughed. "She isn't sick." My boyfriend's face changed from worried to relieved and he plopped down on the couch. I sat down next to him, my body instinctively leaning into his arm. Ronnie gazed at us and bit her lip.
"So," she began, "how did you two meet?" With a smile on my face, I told her how I had wandered into a music store on the other side of town. I never really listened to anything other than what I was used to, classic rock: The Beatles, The Kinks, Pink Floyd, bands like that. I was the product of an endless record player and my parent's old record collection. Chanyeol was working the day I walked in and in his words, "couldn't keep his eyes off of me." He walked over and we began talking about music, art, you name it. We talked until closing time and he ended up giving me his number. Ronnie smiled. "Cute, but cheesy."
"It's cuter than how you and Kyungsoo met." I shot back. Ronnie laughed, rolling her eyes. She seemed like she'd liked Chanyeol, but something in the back of my mind told me that she thought something else. I sighed. I'd try not to let it bother me.
