Ronnie's apartment building loomed ahead of me and I bit my lip, my fingers playing with the soft cotton of my skirt. It was cold; I probably should've wore a pair of jeans, but I convinced myself that since it was dinner and my first time meeting Ronnie's boyfriend in person, I should look presentable. The tap of Chanyeol's shoes against the asphalt sounded behind me and I turned.
"Sorry," he apologized, taking my hand and lacing his fingers with mine. Yeol's hands were cold, like mine. That's not to say I didn't like holding hands with him, it just made my hands even colder. There's a saying: "Cold hands, warm heart." In Yeol's case, that was true. He had the warmest heart of anyone I knew. "Why didn't you go in while I was parking the car?"
I shifted on my heels. They allowed me to almost reach his chin, shortening our height difference. "I wanted to wait for you," I confessed.
He smiled, his lips pulling back to reveal his set of pearly whites. "Aw," he mused. "You're so cute." Chanyeol raised his right hand to ruffle my hair, but I ducked away, pulling him inside the building.
"I'm not cute," I protested over his deep laugh. We walked past the lobby and down the hallway to the right, bypassing the elevator.
"She lives on the first floor?" Chanyeol asked, furrowing his eyebrows in a childlike confusion.
"She has an irrational fear of elevators," I explained, "it's been like that forever."When I first moved into my apartment, she refused to take it for the first few weeks, opting instead to take the stairs every time she came over. I had even contemplated on switching apartments for her because she came over so much, but our schedules changed and she didn't make it over as often.
We stopped in front of a door with "12" on it in gold numbers. The faint smell of cooking came from behind it. A sigh escaped my lips and Chanyeol peered at me. "Are you nervous or something?" He chuckled, a slight smile played at his lips. I nodded. I didn't know too much about Kyungsoo other than what he looked like and how they met. I knew that she was happy, at least, it seem like she was and that was all that mattered. But knowing that still didn't stop the churning of my stomach.
I swallowed my nervousness and knocked, stepping back and taking my boyfriend's hand. The door opened a crack and Ronnie's face appeared. Her hair was pulled back and light makeup covered her face. "Fair warning," she spoke, "Kyungsoo's a little quiet. Her green eyes looked from Chanyeol's face to mine. "And serious."
Chanyeol's eyebrows knit in confusion. "He's serious?" I was confused, too. Ronnie didn't seem like the type to go for serious guys, much less quiet ones.
She nodded her head. "You'll see." Ronnie opened the door wide enough for us to walk in. The faint scent of food cooking grew stronger the closer we got to the kitchen. It smelled delicious, too delicious to be anything that Ronnie made. The only thing she was really good at making was egg sandwiches, and egg sandwiches didn't smell like this.
"You cooked?" I questioned, suspicion filling my voice as I gazed at the back of her head. We turned the corner and I was met by the sight of Kyungsoo, who was standing over the oven top, stirring what looked like spaghetti in a large metal pot. He turned around at the sound of footsteps against the hardwood floor.
He was shorter than I thought he'd be, maybe about 5'8. With Ronnie standing next to him, he was only a few inches taller. "No," he spoke, his voice a deep tenor in comparison to Chanyeol's bass. "I cooked dinner." Kyungsoo wiped his hands on a nearby hand towel and stepped forward, his hand outstretched. "I'm Kyungsoo and you must be Morgan. I've heard a lot about you." He spoke slowly, as if thinking about what he said before he saying it. I shook his hand; it was warm.
I smiled. "And I've heard surprisingly less about you." Ronnie laughed somewhere behind me and her boyfriend raised his eyebrow. I motioned to Yeol. "This is my boyfriend, Chanyeol."
Kyungsoo held out his hand for another handshake, but Yeol grinned and hugged him instead, catching him off guard. "You're a little on the short side, aren't you?" Chanyeol, who towered over Kyungsoo, chuckled. He was only teasing, but Kyungsoo didn't crack a smile.
He glanced over at Ronnie, who erupted into a sort of nervous laughter. It was apparent that our boyfriends were almost complete opposites. Kyungsoo forced a smile, his heart-shaped lips pulling up at the corners. "When compared to a giant like you, I guess I am." He walked back over to the oven top and another burst of deep laughter escaped from Chanyeol's throat. His laughter continued for a moment, fading off before being interrupted by the shrill ringing of someone's phone.
It was Ronnie's. I recognized the ringtone she still hadn't changed since last year. It was the music box version of some song called "Lu" that she couldn't get enough of. Ronnie answered, looking over at us. "I'll be right back," she half whispered and moved to another room. The high-pitched sound of the caller's voice was distinct. Kyungsoo sighed, obviously not too pleased that she left the room. Without thinking about it, he put his hand on the metal handle of the spaghetti pot, jerking his hand back as the heat from the pot stung his palm.
He held one hand in the other and clenched his jaw in pain. "Shit," he muttered under his breath. He looked from his palm to me and furrowed his eyebrows. "Can you get the burn cream from the bathroom? It's on the top shelve of the medicine cabinet."
"Of course." The apartment was smaller than ours, so it was easy enough to locate the bathroom. It was surprisingly spotless considering Ronnie wasn't the most neat person. My guess was that Kyungsoo did most of the cleaning, but I didn't have time to sit and dwell on it. Walking back to Kyungsoo, I held out my hand for his and he complied, allowing me to take it. I gently spread the cream across his palm and he winced at my touch. "Sorry, sorry," I apologized, adamantly. It was bad enough that he didn't seem to like Chanyeol, I didn't need him to dislike me too. I finished quickly, wrapping some bandage that I had found around his palm. "There," I murmured, lifting my gaze to his. I smiled. "All done."
Kyungsoo pulled his hand away and chuckled to himself. "Sorry. I don't usually do that."
Ronnie walked back into the room. "That was just Baekhyun," she paused and looked from Kyungsoo's bandaged hand to me. "What happened?" she asked, obviously confused. "Are you alright?"
Chanyeol, who had been sitting on the couch witnessing the whole thing, stood up and walked toward us. "Your boyfriend burned his hand on the metal and Morgan, like the nice person she is, helped him out." Ronnie raised her eyebrow at us and Kyungsoo grinned sheepishly.
"I'm fine," he assured her. He motioned to the speghetti. "The food is pretty much ready, it just needs to be served."
"I'll do that," Ronnie announced. She picked up the stack of plates on the countertop.
Chanyeol stretched, lifting his arms above his head. "Then lets eat."

"So how did you two meet?" My boyfriends asked, placing his fork on the empty plate in front of him. The food was delicious, the type of meal you would get at a 5 star restaurant. "Morgan refuses to tell me herself and I couldn't get it out of Ronnie when she came over earlier."
Kyungsoo glanced at Ronnie, his hand somehow finding hers and he held it, his thumb tracing circles on hers. "She ran into me. Literally." An amused expression formed on his face and she chuckled. "All I wanted was a donut." He sighed, mock irritation in his voice. "I walked into the shop where she worked and was looking at the menu when out of nowhere, I mean nowhere, comes this silver-haired girl with a giant pot of coffee."
"It wasn't giant," Ronnie interjected, rolling her eyes.
"Yes. It was giant. She wasn't watching where she was going, as usual, and she ran smack into me, spilling a piping hot container of coffee all over my white shirt." Yeol laughed out loud. Kyungsoo smirked, looking off into the distance as if reminiscing. "In hindsight, I could've sued, but I didn't. I got her instead, which makes up for it." I smiled to myself. They were cute. I still would've never pictured them together.
Ronnie opened her mouth to say something, but a knock at the door interrupted her. Kyungsoo furrowed his eyebrows. "I didn't know anyone else was coming over." Ronnie sighed, pushing her chair out from behind her so she could stand up.
"It's just Baekhyun."
