3 police officers ran over to the man who tortured Kirstie and I. They beat him with large batons until he fell unconscious. Paramedics lifted Kirstie and I into stretchers, rushing us into an ambulance. That's when everything started to go fuzzy.
I heard faint voices.
"Hand me the ointment."
"You have the bandages?"
"Yes."
I opened my eyes to see multiple paramedics standing over me with various medical instruments, bandaging my cuts, and someone was sewing up a deep cut on my forehead. They noticed me slowly awakening, and someone smiled at me and pushed a syringe into my body. It hurt, but then the pain quickly went away as I fell back into the blackness.
Once again I jolted awake. I was laying in a hospital bed, and I had bandages all over me. I felt a hand on top of mine, and turned around to see Scott sitting next to me, smiling. Mitch stood behind him.
"Are you okay?" Scott asked as he met my eyes. Mitch playfully hit Scott's arm.
"Of course she's not okay." He sassed. This caused Scott to roll his eyes and give Mitch a glare.
"Is Kirstie okay?" I asked, looking up at them.
"Yes, she's okay." Scott said. There was a knock at the door.
"Come in." Scott and Mitch replied in unison. A doctor walked in carrying a clipboard.
"Okay guys, she's good to go home, but we need to talk about that legal business. Your friend Kirstin needs to stay here for a couple of extra days though. Scott stood up.
"Okay." Then he turned to me.
"Do you need help standing?" I nodded, still feeling a little shaky. Scott lifted me out of the bed and set me on the ground, keeping a hand on my shoulder. I took a few steps, and my legs started to ache, feeling where the ropes had tightly wrapped around them. I gasped as I felt myself falling, but Scott grabbed my waist, lifting me up bridal style.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------–----------------------------------------------------------
Over the next few days, I spent most of my time at Scott and Mitch's apartment, recovering. Scott and Mitch had to fill out lots and lots of paperwork and go to lots and lots of meetings to gain custody of me. But, 2 weeks later, I was officially Scott Hoying and Mitch Grassi's daughter. I never did forget about my mom though. She would always have a special place in my heart.
I pulled the covers over my head, nuzzling my cheek into my soft pillow. I had made a bed for myself on the couch. We were going to move s**n, but for now, I didn't mind the couch. After tossing and turning, I fell into a restless sleep.
I was standing in the kitchen, Scott, Mitch, and Alex behind me. Three police officers came barging through the front door. I was scared. They grabbed me, and they told Mitch that they weren't allowed to adopt me, so I was going to an orphanage. I started to cry, shaking and screaming. Scott started to yell at the police officer, stating that they did everything they needed to in order to adopt me. His face was bright red, and he was trembling with rage. The police officer tried yanked me out of the apartment, holding my waist tightly. I grabbed the door frame of the front door, clenching it tightly. He tried to lift me off the ground, but I screamed more, kicking him violently. Mitch tried to run over to me, tears streaming down his face. Scott grabbed Mitch, pulling him in a hug. He turned his face towards me.
"We're sorry, Valerie! We can't save you! You'll have to be at that orphanage for the rest of your life!" He yelled. I felt a sharp pain in my side, the weight of his words finally sinking in. I started to sob, cries making me crumble to the ground and succumb to the police officer, who dragged me down the hallway and away from the only people that cared about me.I wake up with a start, still shaking and crying. I sighed in relief, realizing that it had only been a dream. Mitch was kneeling next to me, a hand on my shoulder.
"What happened honey?" He asked calmly. "Did you have a nightmare?" I nodded, fear still dancing in my eyes. Would Mitch and Scott really let me get taken to an orphanage? Maybe they really didn't care about me. There was a long pause, Mitch just stroking my back gently.Scott came down the hallway, instantly rushing over to me and sitting next to Mitch. Mitch looked over at Scott.
"She had a nightmare." He said. Suddenly, there was a loud knock on the door. Scott nervously got up and opened the door. Standing in the doorway, were three police officers. I started to cry harder, holding my arms in front of myself protectively. Was my dream coming to life?
"Does Valerie Grassi-Hoying live here?" One of the police officers asked gruffly.
"Yes, come in. She's on the couch." Scott replied. I started to tremble. The police officers walked over to me and smiled. The same one who had talked to Scott crouched down in front of me.
"Valerie, we'd like to talk to you about your mother." He said kindly. Instantly, thoughts rushed through my head at a million miles per hour. Was my mother still alive? Who had killed her? Why had she died?
"O-O-Okay." Was all I managed to stutter out."We understand that your mom was single. Did she ever take pills that she wasn't supposed to? Did you ever see her hurt herself?" The police officer talked to me like I was a baby, but I didn't mind.
"No - I never... I-I" I couldn't finish my sentence. I choked out a sob, feeling Mitch put his arm around me tightly.
"Can we come by the station some time later this week? She's in a very rough state right now." He said protectively.
"Sure, give us a call. Here's my card." He handed Mitch a small business card, and smiled at me, patting my leg as the police officers left.
