I didn't even notice that I was starring at him. I was looking at his muscles. And the way he was breathing. His face. He was so frustrated I didnt want to just leave him alone. He had absolutely nothing drawn or written down on his paper.
Got something to say? He asked looking at me.
Oh, um. No. Sorry. I stood up. That's all I did I just stood there like a dummy.
Have somewhere to go then? He asked. Now sounding annoyed.
I was just wondering if you needed help. That's all. I said.
I don't know. This isn't my thing. He said looking back down at his paper.
I can help if you let me. I said.
So that you can hide something from me, again? He said.
Jase! I said obnoxiously really loud and angrily.
He looked up immediately. More because maybe I startled him.
What! He yelled back.
I'm sorry, forgive me. I sat down beside him. Looking at his face but he wouldn't look back.
Say something. I pleaded.Who was the girl? He asked.
The girl? Her name is Cecilia. She has no family here she left them behind. She thinks her baby brother is on this ship. But she haven't looked around yet. I told her she can stay with me in my tree house if she wanted to. Why? I explained and asked.
She left her family just like I did. He looked at me now. More like he was disgusted by me.
Jase. Are you jealous? Or are you mad? I asked.
Rem. I don't fucking know! Why can't you just leave me alone?
He was so angry now. He started pouncing his leg up and down.I put my hands on his legs so that he would stop. But he moved away. It looked like his eyes began to tear up. I was worried of what he might do.
Jase? I don't know what you want me to do or say. Your not speaking to me. I pleaded my own eyes began to tear up.
Rem. I'm filled with guilt right now. I'm angry. I just need to be left alone. He said. He stood up and began to walk out.
I moved to the door really fast and blocked his way out. I could see that I was on his last nerve right now and that he would really like to punch me. I grabbed both his hands and said:
I'm listening.
Just like he said to me before. Then he started to hug me. And tears came running down. We were both crying. He hugged me tighter. He was crying because of his pain and I was crying because I couldn't do much to help. We were in this position for quite some time. I don't know exactly.
Come on Jase. You need some sleep. I said lending a hand for the second time today.
Thank you. And I'm sorry. He said then he grabbed my hand.
We walked back to our room. We both changed. And I wasn't embarrassed to this time. Then he asked if he could sleep with me in my bed. I wanted to say no but shook my head yes. It was sweet. We cuddled all night and played with each other's hair.
I forgive you. But I hope you tell me things like that in the future. I heard him whisper this in my ear. It was morning I think he thought I was asleep.
I will. I said opening my eyes and smiling.
He looked at me smiled and walked to the bathroom.
Later on that day...
Me and the other teens all were in our underwear because we didn't bring swimsuits with us. Why would we? We swam for hours. It was so much fun. I got to know everyone well. Cecilia, Samantha, Josh, Marcus, Tom, and Jake. We're the kids I saw yesterday. There were some more kids but I barely talked to them. I mostly hung out with Cecilia and Jase. They became friends too I guess.
DINNER TIME! Come on clean yourselves up. And hurry back. We start in a few! Yelled quite a few mothers. Maybe there was going to be a big dinner today or something.
We all got out of the water and headed back to shore. There was a long set of tables on the beach. Everyone looked happy. We ate and started a bon fire which was huge. Some of the little kids wanted to play tag with the big kids. So we played freeze-tag. It was fun. Felt like one big happy family. Me and Jase were fine. And Cecilia was starting to feel like a sister to me. I don't know why, but it felt like I was all she had. Dad told some of his war stories and then people all joined in the story telling. I wanted to tell one but couldn't think of one.
