Gabi Heartwell was a simple child, she was not rude or greedy and she didn't ask for much.

Well, that's because she couldn't.

Gabi lived in the old town of Cherengrat where money was scarce and rats were plentiful.

Her house was near Cheren lake and my my, you would have never seen a house so old and run down. It had two floors which consisted of one bedroom each.

The kitchen was tiny and always smelled of tobbaco and spirit.

The bathroom was also the home to a family of rats and the living room faced the cemetery. Gabi would often sit at the window and stare at the lonley forgotten graves, sometimes she would even wonder about what dark happenings would make her die like that...

...hmm...

Gabi's family was very poor and even though she only lived a few blocks away from the local school, she simply couldn't afford to go.

Plus, only the smartest children got into the school and in Cherengrat there weren't many educated, let alone smart children.

Gabi's mother was a teashop owner and her father was a miner, neither got payed much, but they loved their daughter immensely and very much cared for her well being.

Little did they know of Gabi's friends, they had only met them once but they seemed ok.

Gabi's best friend was called Maya, she had long brown hair that was tied up in plattes and freckles gently dotted around her face.

She didn't go to school either so both Gabi and Maya could play all day if they wanted to.

On a bitter cold evening, when the moon was up and a howling gale was out, little Gabi Heartwell was tucked up in bed reading the only book her family owned it was called, 'a dark heart'.

It was a tale of mischief murder and big, horrible, dark plots.

The book constantly gave Gabi the most brutal nightmares but she didn't mind, over the years, she learnt that nothing in her brutish horrible nightmares could ever happen in real life.

Or could it...
