She started to sweep the rubble off the floor, then she wiped the dirt off the table and repaired one of the chairs. It was still not enough, Maya decided to pay a visit to the carpenters workshop on the far side of town, she got up and exited the room, then she walked out of the alleyway.
She walked down the street with haste and waited patiently for a tram to take her to the other side of Cherengrat. As the tram came rattling up its tracks Maya slipped in without buying a ticket and hid from the ticket inspector. As he came up the middle of the tram, she hid under a seat and kept quiet, over the years, due to how poor she was, she had learned to escape paying for things and take the dangerous route in life, unlike Gabi, she didn't get any pocket money because her family were poorer.
As the tram halted to a stop Maya jumped out of her hiding place and ran past the ticket inspector, as she sped through the tram doors and ran down the street, she neared the carpenters workshop, she ducked down behind a old wooden crate, there was an old clock on one of the outside walls of the warehouse, Maya saw that it was 2 o'clock, she was on time. The carpenter always left his warehouse at 2 o'clock so he could go and buy a pastry from the Johannesburg bakery on the other side of town, Maya spent her time observing the people of Cherengrat when she was bored, she knew everything about everyone which really paid off sometimes. As the carpenter put his coat on and left, Maya darted into the warehouse and closed the door behind her, she looked around found some wooden planks and cement powder and put them in a bag, she then took the carpenters large glass water bottle and ran out of the workshop, she hid on the tram again and when she got off, she ran to the alley and back into her den, with the cement mix and water, she boarded up the holes in the walls, and, with the wooden planks, she fixed the holes in the floor, her den was complete, she could now start making her plan.
