Good, he was still on time...
After the explosion in the mines, lots of workers lost their jobs, one of them, of course, was our Hanz Heartwell.
Now he worked as a assistant in the great bank of Cherengrat and today was his first day at work, and also his last ...
He gingerly pulled his bed covers off of him to reveal his near-bare body and got up and out of bed with a stumble. Passing the kitchen he entered the bathroom and looked himself in the mirror, he looked good for someone who had just got out of bed.
As he made his lunch, which consisted of one piece of cheese and two slices of stale bread, little Gabi Heartwell stole down the stairs silently.
"Father," she whispered, "I came to wish you good luck on your first day at work!"Walking down the cobbled road with his hopes set high, Hanz neared the bakery. He turned the rusty doorknob of the wooden door and going in, he heard a bell chime above his head.
He looked around, "Hello?" he said, "anyone there?"
It might have just been the mouthwatering smell of the bread that had got to him but he was sure he heard a muffled yelp from somewhere in the back of the little shop...
Suddenly, the shop keeper appeared seemingly out of nowhere. He had a tear streaked, dirty face and smelled of blood. As he turned, you could see a deep wound running down his arm.
"Hello Hanz. You'll be wanting a fresh large bloomer, I suppose?" he asked gruffly.
"Yes, bu--" Hanz stammered.
"Good, take it and go!" Leaving the shop, Hanz was confused, looking at the loaf in his hand he realized that this was not like the shopkeeper he knew at all! Putting the bread in his old bag he set off for work.
