(one year later)

As time went by and certain things happened, Katniss and Peeta were expecting their first child. Katniss was a glowing six and a half months pregnant, and she and Peeta couldn't be happier.

However, a lot of baggage came with a baby. The breast-feeding, the diaper changing, getting up in the wee hours of the morning to calm them down — the two parents-to-be had a lot ahead of them.

When they went to get an ultrasound, they were extremely nervous, especially Katniss. But all their fears about the baby vanished when they were told she was fine. That's right, the Mellark's were having a girl!

"Peeta!" Katniss groaned from the couch, "I'm hungry."

"You're always hungry," Peeta chuckled.

"Get me some ice cream – You know what, just bring the whole tub and a spoon," She grinned at him.

"What if I want some ice cream?" He faked a pout, grabbing the container and a spoon out of the drawer.

"Relax, I got two flavors, my favorite and yours."

"Uh, you're eating mine," Peeta looked at her, laughing.

"Oh, shut up!" She snorted, "I'm basically feeding two stomachs here."

"I'll be upstairs, yell if you need anything!" Peeta called as he walked up the stairs while typing on his phone.

When the TV show went on a commercial break, Katniss needed to stretch out her back. She sat down on the floor and practiced the poses from the pregnancy yoga class she attended with Peeta.

Suddenly, she felt a wet spot in her pants. No, she thought, I can't be this early. That's impossible.

Katniss nervously rolled over to find a large red puddle on the floor.

She gasped loudly, desperate for air.

"No, no, no!" Tears welled up in her eyes. I'm not gonna have a baby girl, she thought sadly, sobbing hysterically.

Peeta darted down the stairs to find out what happened. "Katniss, are you okay?"

He stopped in his tracks and gasped when he saw the blood stain on the floor. A miscarriage, which means no baby.

"I.... I'm so sorry, I'm so, so sorry," She cried, staring at the floor. "This never should have happened."

A long period of silence was present until Peeta spoke up.

"I just can't believe we lost her," He croaked. He was lost for words.

"And it's all my fault!" She gulped in realization, wiping more tears from her eyes.

"Babe, don't say that. There's nothing that says it's your fault."

"I was supposed to be there for her," She whispered, hiding her face in her hands. "I'm gonna be a terrible mother... if I even have a kid!" She cried even more.

"Shh, don't cry, it's gonna be alright," He soothed her, "Let's go to the hospital first thing tomorrow since it's getting late." Peeta glanced at their digital clock which read 11:03 PM.

He silently picked her up bridal style to carry her into their bathroom.

"I'm sitting you in the bathtub so the blood won't get to anything else," he mentioned softly. "Want me to bring you some pads or something?"

"Yeah, get a handful of them because the blood isn't stopping at all," She sighed, peeling off her bloody pants and underwear. "Bring me new clothes, too."

She clutched her stomach, letting more tears fall. Why was this happening to someone like her who tried her hardest to raise a healthy baby? Was she just not good enough?
