This is my first formal essay. I use evidence from the awesome book A Taste of Scarlet and Miniver.

Some people change for the better or for the worst, such as a ruler, a queen. Eleanor, Duchess of Aquitaine, Duchess of Normandy, Queen of France, and Queen of England, was at first a selfish ruler. Through the rollercoaster that was her life, she learned and prospered. In the end, she changed her ways and was a great queen. In the novel A Proud Taste For Scarlet And Miniver, Queen Eleanor teaches us through her own life that through many experiences you change, for the better or for the worst.

In the beginning, Eleanor was a young and selfish queen. For example, Abbot Suger states, " Right now she is young and ambitious, she needs some years some maturity." (32) When Eleanor was queen she was selfish and wanted everything done her way. She didn't care what other people thought, including the church. As her life went on she matured and slowly grew out of her childish ways. For example, Matilda Empress stated, " She wasted nothing that she learned. And to an ambitious, restless man like my son, she was an asset, the asset that Eleanor had always known she could be, given half a chance. " (87) Now thirty, Eleanor took in her surroundings and learned from them. As Queen of England, Eleanor also took more responsibility for the kingdom's lands and people. In all, in just about fifteen years Eleanor has matured and grown.

As Eleanor's life came to an end she showed her wisdom and intelligence. For example, William the Marshal states, " Queen Eleanor was a generous hostess," (132) and, " Queen Eleanor was determined that her court should be gay but quiet enough to give her some peace while she was conducting the affairs of state. " (133) After many years of being queen, Eleanor knows what she wants and what she needs, and compromises. She also makes sure that the people will be happy, not just herself, and though it took a long time, Eleanor was changing for the better. Another example of Eleanor's knowledge and wisdom is when Eleanor herself states, " I was still enough judge of people to know that a girl who wants control over her spare time can control a kingdom. Time proved my judgment to be correct. There was peace in England and France when I died. I did not die without cares, but I did die without regrets. " (193) Before she died, Eleanor made a choice that brought peace between England and France. If Eleanor didn't make that choice, when there could've been a war between England and France, but she did. In the end, Eleanor learned from her experiences, good or bad, and was no longer the selfish teenage girl she once was, but she had become a wise queen.

Throughout this book, Eleanor taught us that through many experiences you change, for better or worst. In summary, Eleanor changed from a young girl that needed to show some maturity, to a very generous, intelligent, wise queen. In conclusion, no matter where life takes you, you will change, but it's our job to make it for the better and not the worst.
