We wrote a letter to (made up name), trying to convince them that we needed to separate from England

June 26, 1776

Dear Sophie Devereaux,

It has been awhile since we last wrote each other and I hope that you have, or will, reconsider your choice of being loyal to King George. I fear you do not truly understand what the king has done to us and that you are only seeing his facade. One of the many injustices King George has committed is refusing to let us create our own laws. Yes, he is the king of England but he doesn't have to be our ruler too. He has never been here in the colonies so he doesn't really understand what it's like here and he doesn't know what would be best for us. Also his soldiers have treated us unfairly. The men sent by the king to 'protect' us slayed 5 innocent, unarmed men in the street. On top of everything else the king and his men have done to us he put heavy taxes on everything we own including our properties, paper, and tea. Many other patriots will agree when I say that we don't want a government and a leader that will abuse us with their power. We should have a government that will use its power to protect us. The people should be able to have some say in the laws that get passed and we should vote for a leader that will understand us and what we need because he was us and grew up in the conditions we did, not like snobbish royalty. Though we are different, men, women, children, wealthy or poor, we are all equal and we all have equal rights. We have the right to live our lives the way we want to. We have the right to be free from England and do what we think is best. We have the right to pursue our happiness, to do what we need to do to finally be happy. We need to rebel and break away from England because if we don't, I fear we will always be a slave to England.
