How does the Constitution guard against tyranny?

There is a horror known only too well by our world. It has terrorized many throughout our history and we can never forget the deaths it has caused. It's named tyranny. Tyranny is when absolute power is in the hands of one person or group. The Constitution lists the powers of our government and how it should be run. Within it are two systems, separation of powers and checks and balances. These two systems are the knights that protect us from tyranny.

Separation of powers is like the legs of the knight. They're the foundation for everything else and they support our government. This division of power is to prevent one person from attaining power. James Madison, one of our Founding Fathers, stated, "Liberty requires that the three great departments of power should be separate and distinct."(Document B) We separate the government's power between three branches, legislative, executive, and judicial, where each branch receives a certain amount of power. Madison also stated, "The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many... may be justly pronounced the very definition of tyranny."(Document B) Madison wrote the Constitution with this in mind. He and the other Founding Fathers wanted to protect us from tyranny and so far they have.

Checks and balances are the arms of our guardian which we can use to fight and to protect. This system allows the branches to work together but also limit the power of other branches. The Founding Fathers created this as another way to ensure that the power between the branches would remain equal. James Madison stated, "The three branches should not be so separated as to have no constitutional control over each other."(Document C) Though the powers should be separate the branches should still be able to check the other branches. The legislative branch could pass a bill, but if the executive branch thinks it is unconstitutional, they can veto the bill. This is how branches can check each other. One branch can make a choice, like passing a bill, that has to be either approved or disapproved by another branch, like signing the bill, making it a law, or vetoing it.

Through tyranny can come in many forms, our country has a way to stop it. Our own personal defender. The Constitution. The mind of the knight is the people who created our government, the Founding Fathers. They created it in such a way that it protected us, the people, from the terrors of tyranny. Today, the leaders of the branches, Congress, the president, and the Supreme Court take the place of the Founding Fathers to lead us into the future and away from tyranny. Our knight in shining armor.
