Chapter 6: 1st flashback
"What's it like being dead?"
"Well, it has its advantages."
"Oh really?"
"Yeah."
"Urg," A small blond girl groans. She hears a steady beeping noises and her vision was fuzzy which didn't help her understand where she was, and then zones out again.
Once again more beeping. But these are different beeping noises. Or so she thinks, she doesn't remember.
Honk! What was that? The girl forces her eyes to open. "What the?" Her small body was next to a sidewalk on some wet itchy grass. The cold darkness and the bright moon made it obvious that it was nighttime.
Her small gentle hands pushes herself off the hard cracked ground. The city noises of cars roaming the land and lights flickering on the streets surrounded her. "Where am I?" She wonders out loud. No one was on the sidewalk to question her being there, so she slowly started to walk to the West down a hill towards the water she could see from her view.
The water was clear as she sees herself in the reflection. She inspects herself, sometimes touching her face in curiosity.
Her ratty clothes rubbed against her uncommonly skinny legs as she paces wondering what to do next. "Who am I?" Her soft voices whispers to herself.
"I was going to ask you the same question."
The new voice scares the girl. At first she thinks that was herself speaking, but when she looks up from the calm water she indeed finds a new face to match the new voice.
"I-I," she stutters. "I don't want any trouble," she backs away putting her hands in front of her, showing defeat. The old man seems worried, but she didn't take notice as she continues to go backwards. "Really, I just want to go home,"
"And where is that?" The man was sincere with his words with full worry watching her step back.
"I, I'm not sure." Was her only response, her voice laced in fright and surprise at herself for knowing so little of who she is.
Her eyes hint to her with her vision blurring that she was going to cry. The unknown scared her, she didn't know where to go never mind knowing her own name. She shakes her head refusing to soak her cheeks. "Get away!" Her voice wavering with fright.
"Now please, don't take another step." This command made her frustrated. He thinks he can just tell me what to do!She thinks. I only just met him and he thinks he can just make me do whatever he wants me to! Her new thoughts made her fearless and wanting to be the secret daredevil she barely new of herself as she looks at the man right into his deep blue eyes, she takes a step back.
"No!" The stubby man wails at her poor decision. Instead of a step, the girl falls off the wooden dock with her hands flailing in the air trying to find a latch of some sort to hold onto. Her young scream echoes as she falls into the once calm water, now may be the death of her.
She takes a breath in before she breaks the surface of the water by falling in, the coldness hitting her quickly. She opens her eyes as soon as she is fully in the water. Her eyes sting, adjusting.
She looks up to see the man on a phone frantically. Please, I don't need your help, the girl almost laughs. I'll show him! She swims looking for land other than the dock.
No such luck.
Her brave figure soon starts to fade as her lungs start to ache. She swims to the top and sees how far she swam. The man's eyes grow large, her thought was that he was surprised of her swimming so far, but she turns to see a small shark a couple yards away from her. She screams with terror.
The fin making its way to her she goes underwater and calms herself knowing that if she tries to swim fast in panic she knows she will in fact, die. She starts her way to the dock, the sharp, jagged, grey fin not too far behind. "Man!" The girl didn't know what else to call him, not her first worry either.
The man grabs hold of her goose bumped arm and hugs her as if she was his own daughter. "Are you ok?" His voice for the first time to the girl sounding kind and sincere. She nods. "I'm Tony."
