"Forget-me-not."
The rain fell seemingly slowly yet all at once.
My damp hair laid off my right shoulder as I looked down. The newly dug hole was turning to a gross reddish color.
My face buried into Daniel's tough chest. Everyone was silent, though I saw people's mouths moving. An old priest stood in front moving his mouth the most.
I couldn't hear.
I refused to hear.
It's not real.
My long black dress clung to my shaking body. Daniel's suit coat hung around my small shoulders. He hugged me tightly.
His voice, though not heard, was noticed because I feel his warm shaking breath against my right chilled ear.
I look over at the Priest again. His grey beard soaked in the violent rain, dripping some of the product. The man's fat stomach was used as a bible stand as the man preaches. His mouth wide trying to be heard, not only to the crowd, but seemingly to the heavens.
I glanced at the crowd. I saw all of the people our friend had reached.
I looked at the broken man holding me. Daniel had red eyes from crying, but a stone face. He was looking at me also. He continued to whisper words to me.
I could not hear.
The grey sky only seemed to get darker, colder.
I hugged Daniel harder, he was the only thing that could keep me standing.
This didn't need to happen. Why would anyone think this was needed? Huh God? I was thinking, praying to myself.
My eyes squeezed shut, as if the problem will go away.
Come on, bring him back. Please?
I whimper in my head.
Three men came over with long shovels and started to bury the black, simple yet elegant, coffin.
The Priest continues to shout to the heavens.
I continue not to hear.
The three men were slowly dropping the red dirt into the 6 foot hole.
Stop! I wanted to yell. This isn't real!
Inch by inch the hole was filled.
Person by person the crowd dispersed.
Once it was done I looked up at Daniel.
He wasn't there.
He wasn't holding me.
He wasn't whispering into my ear.
For once I heard the Priest,
"Amen."
