Chapter 22: No Rest for the Weary

I jolted awake but was restrained by bindings on my bed. I looked hastily at my surroundings but then relaxed as I was in the Medical Tent.

"How is it you keep ending up in here?" I heard a voice to my right.

Sitting in a chair was Ray who had just finished cleaning his Vector as he was putting the the gun back together.

"How ya feel?"

"I feel fine, I get the med tent but whats with the bindings?" I asked.

"Whats the last thing you can remember of the mission we went on?"

"Finding the power room, getting attacked by those things again before turning the power on and blacking out."

"You know they bit into you right? It was pretty serious too."

"Y-yeah, I remember my neck and my arm getting bit and then being drained." I said remembering the event.

"Alright lets get these bindings off you as I don't think you really need them." He said releasing me from the the binds. "Put a hand to your neck."

I did so and was a bit surprised, there was no trace I had been bitten at all. I looked at my arm where my second bite was at and found no scars as well.

"How is there no trace of me getting attacked?" I asked a little worried. Had I imagined the whole thing?

"Well you most certainly were attacked, me and Marcus can attest to that. When we called for evac and got you here you were bleeding out pretty badly, the docs did all they could but they couldn't save you. You died on the operating table."

"Wait... Then how the fuck am I even alive?" I questioned in utter disbelief.

"Well me and Marcus were let into the room after the pronounced you dead and after we said our goodbyes I put my hand on your shoulder and I got shocked by something. When I lifted my hand a little red electric current was trailed behind it and then it started to seal your wounds to where they are now. We ran out and got someone and when we came back there was a pulse on your heart monitor."

"So I'm guessing since that happened, I was put in restraints right?"

"Yeah, pretty much. They had no idea what caused you to come back, I can think of three things that might have caused it though."

"Such as?"

"A, getting bit by those things, but they did scans on your blood and found nothing so its unlikely. B, Caren did something to you while she had you possessed by Jack the Ripper. Or..."

"Something to do with my Shell type right?" I interrupted.

Ray nodded. Just then Commander Hicks walked in followed by Katty, Marcus, and Arthur. They were all discussing something before Hicks looked up and saw me and stopped before looking at Ray.

"She good?" He asked a little hesitant.

"Nah shes gonna go crazy and try to kill everyone." He answered sarcastically "Of course she's fine, just like we said."

"Watch it smart ass, Well Artemis good to have you back to land of the living. Anyways Ray we got a mission planned out for you and your team from the intel you got from the base."

"You got the intel?" I asked.

"Yeah, we torched the base afterwards." Marcus answered.

"Back on topic, we found yet another base that if we were to take it would give the advantage we would need to both assault Seattle and provide us the ground we need to start pushing California."
