"That's my seat."
The heavy hand on my shoulder squeezes slightly. Looking behind me I see Billy Hardy, and going off of the fact that "his seat" was pushed way off into a secluded corner, he probably still has to deal with bullying. Back in middle school he and I were the easiest kids to pick on. I was pretty good with not paying attention to it, but Billy used to cry alone while the other kids played. I would stay inside and read all kinds of books, a much better way to stay away from the cruel kids in my opinion. I never let them see my tears, I'd learned the hard way that it just makes it easier for them, but Billy never got that memo, I guess.
"Hi, Billy."
He blinks at me twice slowly before realization sets in. "Vivian? Wait, hold on." He runs off and comes back a moment later with another desk, holding it on his shoulder with one arm. A very interesting sight; he was always known for being a wimp with no hand-eye coordination.
Setting the desk next to mine, he sits down and looks at me with wide eyes. "What are you doing here? I thought you were homeschooled."
"I'm just here for the rest of the semester. I've already been accepted to college."
"Yeah, but why? If I were you, I wouldn't ever come back to school. It sucks."
"It's something my parents decided on. I didn't really have much of a say."
"Hmmm. That sucks." He looks down at the book still gripped in my hands. "That's a very good read. It's not from this library, it's from one right outside of town. It's due in a week, so if you want to read it, I just hope you won't make me late in turning it in."
"Oh, I'm sorry, here," I hand the book out to him.
"No, you looked pretty interested in it." He looks up at the red school bell that hung on the wall just across from where we sat. Two seconds later it rings, breaking what little silence there had been. "Go on, read it. I think it can be rather... enlightening." Shooting me a smirk, he grabs his bag and leaves the library.
Enlightening, huh?
You should read it! Maybe we can learn some more about the forest!
You know it could just be fiction, right?
I dunno, looks pretty legit to me, Vivi. Any book with that long of a title has to be non-fiction.
Haven't you ever heard not to judge a book by it's cover, Vi?
I'm not... I'm judging it by it's title!
Oh dear...
