I didn't get to read the book before the school day was done. After the bell rang I had to trudge myself up to the third floor for a computer science class. Then finally, AP Biology with Sabrina. Of course the second I walked in, she hauled me over to the empty chair beside her on the lab bench and proceeded to squeal about hot "absolutely GOR-GEE-OUS" the man who would be teaching us was.
He walked in a few moments later, and gazed the room. When his eyes landed on me, his body went rigid and his nostrils flared, like how Aiden reacted that time a snake slithered into my path when I was greeting him. Needless to say, the snake didn't stay in my path for very long after that. Of course, Aiden didn't have to do much more than glare at it for the slimy thing to slither right back into the bushes. Aiden never hurts anything, just scares them. But somehow I didn't think this teacher guy wanted to harm me, I had never even met the guy before. But he did look startled by my being in the class.
Maybe he just didn't expect a new student? He can't anything against you, Vivi, can he?
Maybe he just doesn't like my face... Can't blame him, I don't like it much either
What? Oh come on, you're beautiful Vivi! Don't think that way!
Yeah, yeah, whatever you say, Vi.
Ka-thump... ka-thump... thump...
I stop in my tracks, only a few meters into the thick trees. After school I stopped by home to find Mom on her way out to the animal shelter. She told me Dad would be home late at night and she had an emergency case at the shelter that she needed to attend to. After telling me to stay inside and lock the doors, she left. And then so did I, deciding to show the book to Aiden and ask him what he thought of it.
Ka-thump... thump... thump-thump
Hearing the footsteps a little ways ahead of me, I jump behind a tree and hold my breath. Aiden doesn't make that much noise when he walks, which means that isn't Aiden. Which means I need to get away. Fast.
The day we went to the flower field, Aiden looked me straight in the eye and said in the most serious voice I've ever heard, "Should you ever see anyone but me in this forest, run as fast as you can back home. Do not try to see who it is, just run."
I knew it was absolutely one-hundred percent not a joke, but I couldn't help but be curious.
I shake my head and turn back the way I came from. Suddenly something, or someone, pushes me to the ground, front first. My body jostles painfully against the ground, and I close my eyes as I face plant the dead leaves.
I lift my head a bit, spitting out the brittle leaves that had made their way into my mouth. In front of my eyes I see two glittery, bedazzled, black boots completely void of any scuffs.
