Our first off day passed and today, I had my 18 week doctors' appointment with Will. I invited Antonio to come because recently, I don't think that I've been spending enough time with him. I want him to be prepared to become an Uncle, that may or may not be spending a lot of time in their lives.
We walked into the doctors' office, and Antonio followed us in about 2 minutes later. We were barely there for 20 minutes, when the nurse came out.
"Gabby Dawson?"
"That's me!"
"Ok, you guys can follow me into room 2," she said leading us down the hall.
As soon as we were there, she checked my vitals.
"Ok, Dr. Halstead will be in in a few moments."
"Ok, thank you!"
"Ready sis?"
"Yeah, I am! I want to hear their heartbeats again."
"I'm excited too." Matt chimed in. He came and rested his hand on my stomach and bent down and kissed it.
Matt sat back down and Antonio came over. He did the same thing as Matt, and rested his hand on my stomach.
"Hey little nieces and nephew, be good to my sister, okay? Just let her rest!"
Suddenly I felt a kick!
"Oh my god! Matt they kicked!"
He ran the few steps to the exam table and placed his hand on my stomach. They kicked again.
"They're getting big!"
"Yeah, they're gonna be boxers just like me!"
We laughed and suddenly Will walked in.
"Hey Gabby, Matt, Antonio! I hate to do this, but only the mom and dad can be in here while getting the exam done, sorry bud!"
"It's ok, rules are rules!"
"Sorry, Tonio!"
"Gabby, it's fine. I'll be out here when you're done."
He walked out and Will started with some questions."
"So, how have you been feeling?"
"Good, I guess. I've had some fatigue with the morning sickness and all, but other than that I feel ok."
"Um, when was your last episode of morning sickness, Gabby?"
"Just last night. It was pretty bad too. It lasted almost an hour and a half."
"Ok, we're going to run some tests after I do the exam on the babies."
I suddenly panicked.
"Why, is everything ok?"
The machine that took my vitals suddenly started to beep.
"Woah, Gabby, calm down! You can't put the babies under that much stress! Just breathe. I have to run the tests because your morning sickness should have stopped about 2-3 weeks ago. It could be signs of gestational diabetes, but we won't know until the tests come back. It's ok."
Matt came over and held my hand.
"You're going to be fine babe, why don't we get on with what you've been waiting for for the past 4 weeks?
"Ok."
Will started to do the physical part of the exam.
"Gabby, you're already showing! You're not even 20 weeks yet!"
"I know Will, I already had to order new tops to work in."
"Ok, here is the ultrasound."
He moved around the probe until we could see all 3 of the babies in frame.
"There's baby A, baby B, and baby C. It looks like A and B are girls and C is a boy!"
"Can we have picture?"
"Of course, now for the heartbeats!"
The sound of the babies' heartbeats was one of the most amazing things that I could've heard in that moment.
"They sound good! Now, if you don't mind, I'm going to take some blood."
"That's ok!"
He took my blood and finished up by handing me my photo.
"Ok, I'll be back in less than an hour with the results. Antonio can come in now."
"Thanks Will." Matt said.
Antonio came in.
"So, how was it? Ready to go?"
"Antonio, we can't go just yet. They're doing some tests on her to see if she has a form of diabetes that happens during some pregnancies."
"It'll be okay Gabby!"
He looked over at me and I guess I had a worried look on my face. Matt came over and give me a hug.
A few moments later Will walked in. He sat down on the chair and Matt came over to hold my hand.
"Ok, so unfortunately, you do have gestational diabetes, so we will need to see you about once a week to monitor your blood sugar levels. No overly sugary foods or drinks, or it could cause complications like..."
"I know, I'm a paramedic. It could cause diabetes when you are not pregnant and could cause a higher rate of being stillborn. I know." I said this with so much force trying not to cry.
"Ok, it is going to be ok. I will set up the appointments for you, we just have to stay on top of this."
We talked for about 5 minutes longer and scheduled the appointments for the next 22 weeks. As soon as he walked out, I started to bawl. Matt ran over.
"Hey, hey, hey. Look at me. It's ok. Our babies are fine, you just need to be more cautious. You heard him, we just have to stay on top of this."
"Gabby, I'm going to tell you the same thing you told me when I got shot, we Dawsons, we're fighters. You are those precious babies of yours are going to be just fine."
Matt, and Antonio tried to console me, but right now I was too worried to hear them out. I told them I just wanted to go home. We said our goodbye's to Antonio, and he said that he would stop by our next off day. We got in our car and left.
The entire care ride home, I cried. I was too worried, but I knew I couldn't keep them under all of this stress.
When we got home, Matt walked me up to the door and laid me down in bed, which is where I told him I wanted to be. He treated me like I was sick, and propped up the pillows, and made me some food. I was too upset to be happy, so I watched some sad movies.
Matt came in and laid with me. After about 50 minutes of me just snuggling with him, Matt got up and told me he had to make a call. About 10 minutes later, the doorbell rang. I got up to answer it.
"Herrmann?" I said with big, red, puffy eyes.
"Hey Gabby, Matt told me what's going on."
I started to cry again.
Hey guys! So, yes, I updated twice in one night, but I hope this makes up for me not updating for 3 days! I'm sorry for the news, but I didn't want everything to be perfect, since nothing is. Next chapter will be heart to heart, and probably one of a shorter on, with just Herrmann and Gabby talking. If that's too short, I make it into a longer chapter and merge together the next shift with that. I'm excited for the story still to come!
