There was a knock at the door which was quite loud.
“Xey! Get the door honey.” Mom said from the kitchen.
“I’m on it”
I opened the door to see a man with straight features. Tall and old yet seemed to be very strong. I had never seen this man in my life before.
“Alexander! My boy. You’ve grown so much. I remember you when you were 3.”
It was like one of those uncles you would never remember. But this man wasn’t a relative of ours.
“George! You’re finally here.” Mom said from behind me.
“Xey, get your things into george’s car. We’ll be leaving soon.”
“But mom..” I said.
“Ow! Linda, ill do it.. Don’t hassle the boy” I was interrupted by george.
George left with the tent and couple of the bags.
“Mom! I said I would drive. Why did you call george?”
“Listen honey, this is your first time. The woods can be dangerous and george knows the place well”
there we go again. She never stops treating me like a five year old. I mean what’s the least thing that could happen, getting eaten by trees.
“Mom, I’m 17! I’m a grown man…”
“But you’re still my baby.” Yeah she said it.
“Yaay! Joy!” I said to tease my mom with sarcasm.
On the way to camp the wind blew steady, the green trees seemed calm and there was peaceful silence. I loved the place. When we reached the location there were families from the community, most were my dads friend. My dad passed away when I was five, so these were the one’s who helped my mom get through it. Ever since my dad left, I was shy. I didn’t like talking to people a lot. So I didn’t know these families.
“Give me a hand with these son.” George said.
“Sure. Ill be there.”
George and I were almost done when I dropped one of the box because I couldn’t believe my eyes. I was stunned and I felt my heart stop.
“Z..oe..y!”
She giggled. “Xey, are you owkay? Do you need some help?” Her voice is so silvery,so light yet very pleasant.
“Haha.. No! Thanks”
“You never told me you were coming to camp.” She said with the spark in her eyes.
“Well, I didn’t know.. You’d come and we never eermm… talk at school.”
“True but I thought I’d scare you. So I never tried to.”
She was a little red like she was flushed with embarrassment. Yeah. I feel super proud of myself. “I’m sorry. Its just…”
“Xey, meet mr.field. Your father’s best friend.” My mom came out of nowhere. “Hi sir. Its nice to meet you.”
“Same here son. I see you know my daughter very well.” He said, with a deep voice and grin.
