“Did y-you..?” I said, with wide eyes.
She nodded like a little child who wanted chocolate, with puppy eyes. She turned around and i couldn’t tell what was going through her mind. i turned her around just right to make her face me and there they were, the tears again. i couldn’t stand them. I wiped them away.
“What is it Faith?”
She shook her head which i suppose meant , ‘Nothing’
“Faith tell me, come on.”
She hugged me tight, weeping her tears on my shoulder, i could feel her heart beat and her warm breathe. And there it was, the same huge gust of wind again. Like the one that blew hard that night. I couldn’t see a lot so i hugged her making sure she wouldn’t be hurt. And just like the past it was gone within seconds and everything was the way it was.
We sat under the tree with her head on shoulder and my arms around her making her secure. And then she spoke, telling me her story.
“It was a family reunion at camp, My dad and uncle were police officers. One evening at camp, my dad and i were playing hide and seek across the pond and he was counting to 10 as i hide behind this tree and before he could say 10, someone shot him. One of the gangstas my dad had put in prison and as my dad fell to the ground her said, ‘Run Faith, Run.’ I cried and ran toward this place and i sat under the tree hoping my dad would come back to take me but i was here ever since then, alone. i tried getting back but i couldn’t see where i came from so i lived here away from people, alone, wondering around the woods for years.”
She looked at me with her eyes shedding tears and bawling. It was horrible, what happened to her. She was only 5 and innocent angel lost in the middle of no where. i pulled her head close to me, kissing her forehead i said, “I promise you everything will be fine from now on.”
We sat there i whole time hoping one of us would talk but we enjoyed each others presence. i knew we had to get back and our only way was to get to the fire.
“Faith, Are you going to come with me?” I asked for some positive vibes.
“Yes. Let’s go.” She said , with the smile at the corner of her face.
And there we were making our way through the trees, following the spark of fire. Before we knew it, it wasn’t far and before we could lead ourselves out. We realized it wasn’t the camp or the pond, it was a completely other place. It looked like a little village with people and we saw people busy working, children running around with giggles of happiness. I was just happy to see people and know that maybe we could come out and then Faith held my hand tight with a huge question mark on her face.
“Xey, I haven’t been around people for a long time and i don’t think i can do it. These people seem dangerous please don’t go.”
“We have to get out this place and no matter dangerous they may seem, we can’t really judge right?”
“True. B-but Xey, Leave me here. Please, I’ll come when i can. I promise, I’ll be here under this tree. I’ll come when it gets darker.”
