my escape

I feel the crackle of leaves underneath my bare feet
My lungs breathing in the air exhaled by a thousand trees
I walk slowly, I like to take it all in.
Its revitalizing.
Touching all the branches as I go,
Feeling the waxy softness of new leaves.
Every step I take stirs the air,
It smells of sodden earth and warmth.
A peace travels through me as my fingers slide across the riveted bark of an old oak tree.
Serenity overcomes me.
There is no longer white noise.
There is a certain vibrance with every sparrow song.
Every rustle of a birch leaf.
So lovely.
Sounds with which my lungs could never compete.
And it is in a world like this
That I find it so easy
To smile.
