Her scarlet lips stand out
Against the frosty pallor of her face
Like a cardinal amongst snow.
Her eyes are open
Reflecting the effervescent swells that ripple beneath
Her lashes flutter in the gusts of wind
That sway her footing on the edge.
Her hair flies wildly around her
Like a swarm of confused bumblebees.
She clenches her fists
As if still trying to hold to the hope
That long ago slipped from her grasp
Her bare feet inch closer to the edge of cold solid stone beneath her
That chills her to her bones.
Flesh and bone.
Her brows knit together.
Her teeth clenched tight.
Grinding them against each other
Closer she wanders.
Until the stone is no more
there is but air beneath her feet
And rushing around her being
She feels the air ripping through her hair
From her lungs
Her eyes closed.
Her heart beats faster.
The bustle and chaos and struggle around her now
is just a pounding in her ears
A whisper in the wind
A footprint on the sand
Soon to be washed away by the ocean.
Soon she will be.
