For the first time in my life I feel disgusting, regretful, and hated. I feel all these things and I don’t know what to do about these feelings. They feel heavy on my shoulders. I have spent all day in my room because it is now Thanksgiving break. The time of giving, giving thanks for everything you have. Yet, I feel like I am not grateful for anything because everything I have is not real. It’s all fake because everything I have is founded on lies. My relationship with Drew, my friendship with Sasha, and many other things that I just don’t want to think about.
I have been practicing for the production twice a day, six days a week, for the past week so I’ve had little to no time to spend with Kent, Drew, the girls or my parents. Today is my first day off and I just feel weird not dancing or practicing so I decide that I would go grab a bite with Drew and then practice in the basement.
“Hey baby.” Drew kisses me on the cheek when I open the door for him. I smile shyly and walk with him to his car. “So, where to?”
“Anywhere I guess.” I smile at him.
“Well, I guess we could go on a little adventure if you want.”
“As long as I’m back in two hours,” He pulls over half way through the road. “What?”
“I haven’t seen you in two weeks but for a couple seconds outside of the school when I go get Wes and them and that day when I went to talk to you at your house. Come on, I really want to spend time with you and the fact that I only have two hours doesn’t really make me a happy Drew.” He does a puppy dog face which makes me laugh so I agree.
We haven’t really labeled ourselves as girlfriend and boyfriend yet but the media seems to think that we are. The boys just released a new song called ‘Chloe’ and ever since the release of the song they’ve been selling out more concert arenas which is cool but, this puts more attention on our relationship as well. I don’t mind the attention because it’s not that bad yet. People come up to me and ask for pictures now which is weird because I’m not famous in any way, shape, or form.
“We’re here!” I look around and we’re in the parking lot of a strip mall.
“Why here?”
“Well because we’re going to buy you some appropriate attire for the rest of the day!”
“Wait what?”
“We’re going hiking.” Hiking? Really? He’s going to take up all my time isn’t he? I don’t argue with him because I know I won’t win. I stay quiet as we walk into the Nike store. He intertwines his fingers with mine, and it makes my heart race. I look up at him and smile. “Go get what you want.” He lets go of my hand and pushes me off to the shoes first. I grab the lightest pair of running shoes I could find, a gorgeous baby blue color with hot pink laces and logo. Next I find a baby blue sports bra, black ankle socks, and a black pair of spandex that stretch to my knees. I lay them all on the counter and hand the guy my credit card.
“No, I’m paying.” Drew grabs my card out of his hand and hands him two crisp hundred dollar bills.
“Drew, stop, you paid for me last time let me pay.” I take out another credit card and hand it to the clerk. Did I mention he looks very annoyed?
“Preston, I have a camelback I would like to pay for too so could you please stop.” He lays this backpack that is supposed to hold water on the table. It looks so funny I just want to laugh but I don’t partially because I don’t want to be rude but also because I think it’s cute of him to want something like that.
“Hey, just take my money and let me pay for it okay? He already paid for me several times.” I hand the money to the clerk and he takes it giving Drew his card back.
“Bro, seriously?” Drew says to the guy as he gives me my change back.
“Sorry man, she said you paid for her multiple times. What can I say, if she wants to pay just this once, let her?” He winks at me which kind of freaks me out but I get the gesture.
Drew looks at me and rolls his eyes as he takes the bag off the counter. “Thank you beautiful.”
“You’re welcome.” I smile back. I just realized that I have nowhere to change. “How am I going to change into this?”
“We’ll figure it out.” Drew winks at me and I push him.
As we make our way to the car, Drew gets a phone call. “Hey man what’s up?” “No, I’m with Preston why?” “No, sorry man I said no.”
“Who was that?” I ask. I’m kind of worried because my name was in the conversation.
“Wesley.” He answers with a blank expression.
“Oh.” Even though I’m a bit worried about what just went down on the phone, I don’t question Drew anymore because he seemed a bit heated when he was speaking to Wes on the phone, and he seems more irritated now that I asked him who he was speaking to.
The rest of the way to the hiking spot was quiet besides the dull roar of the music in the back ground. When we arrive Drew turns towards me and smiles. “Go get changed.”
“Where?” I ask him seeing that there is nowhere in a five mile radius for me to change.
“You can change in the back if you want. I’ll go change somewhere in the trees.”
“Are you being serious?”
“I love nature what can I say.” He hops out of the car and disappears in the bushes and trees.
I get in the back and quickly change because I don’t want anyone to see my… You know everything that is supposed to be kept to myself until marriage. Maybe one day it will happen between the two of us, just not now.
I tie my hair up in a high ponytail and get out of the car. “The athletic look is probably the best look on you.” A familiar voice calls. I turn around to see Drew shirtless.
“Um...” I clear my throat. “Hi.” He laughs and pulls me in. I keep staring at his lip which leads up to him leaning down closer to me. I wrap my arms around his neck as he gently places his lips on mine.
“You’re so perfect, wow.” He looks me in the eyes when he says this and it just makes me shiver. I run my thumb over his lips because he has some shine on them from my lip gloss. He leans down once more and gives me a peck before letting go. “Alright, let’s go babe.”
Every couple of minutes I look over a Drew and I notice as we get higher and higher, he looks happier and happier. Every time Drew told me to stop, we could see more parts of Wakefield. Once we reach the top, he stands and stares at me then he just plops down. “Come sit with me!” He pats the ground next to him. I sit down next to him worried that he might pull me in because I’m all sweaty and disgusting.
“This is such a gorgeous view.” I say. “This isn’t only Wakefield is it?” He shakes his head no.
“This is Wakefield and part of Santa Barbara.” He smiles as he look out across the horizon.
“How’d you know that?”
“I spend a lot of time outdoors.” He puts his sweaty arm around me but I don’t mind anymore. Now that I think about it, I would have regretted not going with him today if I decided that practice was more important. I lay my head on his shoulder and it feels like we’re the only two people in the world.
