“Lotti! Oh my gosh babe I’m totally missed you so much.”  I say making my way up to Lotti.  I haven’t seen her since last week which is a really long time for us.  Sasha is nowhere to be found.  She’s probably in a bathroom somewhere getting excited with some guy she just met five minutes ago.  See, Sasha has this reputation and she has to keep up with it.  She feels like if she falls behind it, then people won’t respect her.  Not that they respect her now.

Today is the first exam day of exam week.  Each exam is taken place in your regular classroom with a person other than your teacher watching over everyone to make sure that no one cheats.  They don’t allow your normal teachers in the room anymore unless you’re in a fine arts class because one time they caught a teacher helping another student out on their chemistry exam.

After feeling like I aced all of my exams, it’s time to meet up with Wesley to practice our song one last time before we go into the classroom to perform for our teacher.

“Hey gorgeous.”  Wesley welcomes me into the practice room with a smile on his face.  I don’t really want him flirting with me though; I don’t need any more confusion in my life at this moment.

“Hey Wes,” My voice trails off as I sit down at the piano.  “Ready?”  He picks up the guitar pick and shakes his head.  After running through the song twice, we make a few last minute changes and make our way to the class room as the bell rings.

“Alright, Jason and Rita you’re up first.”  The teacher says before taking a sip of his coffee.  He writes something down on the piece of paper and looks back up giving them a nod to signal that he is ready to hear them.  I cringe at the awful piano playing and meaningless lyrics.

“I’m disgusted.”  I whisper into Wesley’s ear.

“Don’t be rude bro, I’m sure they tried their best.”  He whispers back.  After four more performances, two of which were horrid, it’s time to face the music.

“Wesley and Preston please.”  Wesley rubs my back because he can see that I’m shaking.

“So, this song is called Beneath your Beautiful and we hope you guys like it.”  Wesley announces to the class the name of the song and counts to three.

“You tell all the boys no

Makes you feel good

Yeah

I know you’re out of my league

But that won’t scare me away oh, no

You’ve carried for so long

You couldn’t stop if you tried it

You’ve built your walls so high

That no one could climb it

But I’m gunna try

Would you let me

See beneath your beautiful

Would you let me

See beneath your perfect

Take it off no girl

Take it off now girl

I wanna see inside

Would you let me

See beneath your beautiful

Tonight”

Wesley’s voice is so angelic I almost forgot that I have to start singing.

“You let all the boys go

Makes you feel good

Don’t it?

Behind that broadway show

I hear a voice screamin’ please don’t hurt me…”

When we finish the song our teacher gives us a smile and everyone starts to clap.  I honestly feel so accomplished because I didn’t think we’d get this response.

“It’s not fair, he’s a professional basically.”  Someone shouts from one of the risers in the back of the room.

“We put so much work into this and if you doubt that for one second then you should leave.”  I say with anger in my voice.  Wesley stares at me to tell me that I shouldn’t say anything else so I take a deep breath and go back to my seat.

“Alright class, everyone’s finished so you can take out your phones and do whatever for the remainder of class as long as I don’t get in trouble for it.”  Our teacher lets out a low sigh and walks back into his office.

“Hey Pres, can I show you something?”  Wes scratches the back of his head and walks towards the practice room.

“What’s up?”  I ask looking around.

“I-I just really didn’t know how to say it so, I wrote you a song.”

“Wes, I’m not doing this okay?”  I tell him.  I don’t need to be any more confused than I was before.  That date with Drew was perfect, I’m not going to let anything else jeopardize our relationship.

“Please just let me show you.”  He sits me down and I know I have to listen now because he has already started strumming on his guitar.

“Aren’t you somethin’

To admire

Cause you shine in something like a mirror

And I can’t help but notice

That you reflect in this heart of mine…”

By the end of the song I’m crying because I don’t know what to think.  Here in one hand I have this amazing guy that is so down to earth and so good to me.  In the other I have one that sees me for who I truly am, and treats me the way I should be treated.

“That’s not the reaction I was hoping for…”  Wesley says quietly.  His eyes are piercing into my soul.  He looks so sad and alone.

“Why are you doing this to me?”  I ask in a low whisper.

“Because I care about you.”

“If you cared about me, you wouldn’t have confused me Wes.  You wouldn’t have made me feel so wanted and then totally destroy all my hope by having a girlfriend.  You wouldn’t have kissed me knowing that I’m going out with your best friend.  And you wouldn’t have written me this song.”  I wiped the tears away from my eyes and stand up to leave.  Wesley walks over to the door and blocks it with his body.

“That kiss meant something and you’d be fucking lying if you said that it didn’t.”

“If it meant something you wouldn’t have had to lie that you were drunk in order to do it.”  Wesley looks at the floor in defeat.  He moves away from the door to let me out.

The bell rings to let everyone.  I spot Lotti and Sasha in the hall waiting by my locker but I’m still sobbing and I don’t want them to see me in the state that I am in.  I walk quickly to my car hoping that I dodge everyone in the process.

“Preston!”  I hear a familiar voice calling after me.  It’s Drew.  He’s probably here to pick up Wesley and Keaton.

“Preston we have to talk!”  Wesley shouts after me.  I turn around seeing the two boys in confusion.

“Baby, what’s wrong?”  Drew pulls me into a hug but I don’t hug him back.

“Why don’t you ask your friend?”  I say coldly.  I push out of his hug and walk towards my car.  I don’t need this right now.  I really don’t.
