However, the bus pulls up a few minutes later, the driver apologising profusely about the delay, starting to ramble on about teenagers on skateboards and cats running into the road and so forth. Rose and I glance sideways at each other and it takes all of my might not to burst out laughing. The driver sounds as though he is holding his nose as he speaks, and his voice is high pitched which makes it sound even more ridiculous. My laughter dies when I look around the bus as I give the driver my money. Chris is there, on the back row, laughing at a joke one of his mates has made. He flips his overgrown fringe as he looks at each of them in turn, and then he catches me staring at him.

"Got something to say, Evans?" Jonathan, one of his mates, sneers.

"Oh, uh, no, I just-" It makes me think of the embarrassed Chris in my dream and I blush like crazy, collect my change and positively race up the stairs to the top floor.

"Hey, Sky!" calls Rose. "Wait up!"

"I didn't know you were training for the marathon this summer!" Jonathan says loudly.

He and a couple of others start laughing, Chris included, much to my dismay, and her expression turns hard as stone as she strides up to them.

"You think that was funny, huh?" she says.

They nod in unison, apart from Chris, which I am pleased to see, until she throws the blueberry muffin she was eating in Jonathan's face and walks off.

I cannot help but burst into laughter as I watch a piece of blueberry fall onto his cheek, and see the muffin crumbs in his cockatoo like hair.
