Suddenly I spot my mum at the kitchen window. I didn't realise we were right outside my house. She is on the phone to someone, probably a business call, and is prowling around the kitchen like some kind of cat.
"This is my house," I say, feeling awkward. I shift from foot to foot. What if he kisses me? What if Mum looks up? Oh, to hell with it. Does it matter if she sees?
At that exact moment, she ends the call and looks up, out of the window, and sees me and Chris.
"I, er..." I say, trailing off, unsure what to say. Chris looks in the direction in looking, sees my Mum gawping at us an says under is breath, "Is this your house?"
"Um, yes," I say.
He knocks my purse which I'm still holding from the bus ride out of my hand with one swift move, and before I can ask what the hell he thinks he's doing, crouches down to pick it up. I am left standing there like a lemon, feeling stupid. Heat rushes into my cheeks. Mum waves at me and I feel like disappearing. Chris leaps up again and hands me the purse.
"No need to thank me," he says, and walks past me quickly.
I walk inside, and then I realise that he just saved me from a very awkward situation.
