Chapter 8
When I was done changing, I realized I was bored. Oh so bored! Then I remembered Jace had given me his number. I decided I would call, but only a couple of hours had passed. I didn't want to look desperate. But then again I don't think I'll have a chance to call him because Max would probably be around me 24/7. Also what else do I have to lose? I quickly ran downstairs to the home phone and punched in the numbers before I lost my confidence. It rang three times and by that time I was chewing off my nails when someone finally picked up.
“Hello?” said a male voice.
“Um, is this Jace?” I asked nervously.
“Yes, who is this?” replied Jace.
“It's me Melanie-” I started to say.
“Oh! “ said Jace “ I remember you, last night at the fair, right?”
“Yeah,” I said smiling at the thought that he had remembered me.
“Did you get home safely with out nothing weird going on?” he asked.
When Jace asked that, something inside me started to say 'ALERT, ALERT'. Something fishy was going on here with my new friend. I decided to lie and see what happened.
“No,” I said not skipping a beat “ why the question?”
“Oh no reason,” Jace said quickly. A little too quickly. “Anyways I was wondering if you'd like to hang out sometime?"
At the same time when Jace asked that I could hear Max coming down the stairs.
“Oh um sure,” I said quickly
“Really?” he asked as though shocked I wouldn't say yes.
“Yes.” I said my eyes flitting towards the stairs “ um, hey Jace. I gotta get going. Call you later okay?”
“Oh okay sure later Mel,” said Jace.
“Bye Jace,' I said and hung up quickly.
“Who was that?" asked Max as he headed towards the kitchen.
“No one important,” I replied going to get breakfast too.
Max just started at me his eyes narrowed.
