The next day, Poe and Onya went out on patrol in the academy X-Wings.
Ben sat on top of the roof, chin resting on his knees.
He heard footsteps behind him and turned.
It was Pava.
She stood beside him. "Can I sit down?"
He shrugged and leaned back. She lowered herself beside him and sat cross legged.
"So, Jedi Padawan, and X-Wing fighter?" Jess asked, glancing at him.
Ben shrugged. "My uncle and grandfather were both pilots, and obviously they're Jedi."
"That's neat."
"How did you get so highly ranked at, what, thirteen?" Ben asked, purposefully underestimating her age.
"I'm fourteen. You're, what, twelve?"
"Fifteen."
He glanced over at her. She was grinning.
"So, how did you do it?"
"I started flying when I was eight."
"That would explain it."
She let out a one-beat laugh. "Yeah. When did you start flying?"
He shrugged. "Less than two years. But not constantly, I just occasional runs to Tatooine and obviously once to Dunov. Why were you so upset about coming here?"
"It's no big deal. I was just looking forward to seeing someone, who was supposed to be on patrol."
"Supposed to be?"
"He doesn't often go. It's gotten him disciplined more times than once"
"Who is he?"
"My brother, Baz."
"Oh. I don't think I know him."
"You left the base before he came. He used to live on Jakku. He's older, by six years."
Ben sat forward again. "Oh."
They sat in silence for a bit. "What's it like, being Luke Skywalker's Padawan?"
He shrugged. "I don't know. Same as being anyone else's Padawan, even though there's no one else to train under."
"But he's a legend," Jess said.
"He's also my uncle, so I grew up with him."
She tilted her shoulders slightly in an 'oh, I understand' gesture.
"He's so amazing though. Blowing up the Death Star, rescuing the princess--"
"My father rescued her, too, and she helped herself also," Ben defended.
Jess gave an apologetic laugh.
Ben glanced over at her. "Is it hard? Being a pilot?"
"Not really. It's just in battle, when you lose someone."
They fell silent.
"Did you know him well?"
"Yeah. He was Baz's friend."
