Chapter 23: Gaining Some Respect

RECAP: Bella looked to Edward, and for the first time he had nothing to say to her- nothing to reassure her with. He looked to me helplessly. I chose my words carefully and whispered to her, "Your fate has brought us this far. We would be foolish to try and go against it now."

Chapter 23: Gaining Some Respect

JESSICA'S POV

Everyone starred at me wide eyed, as if they had suddenly put all the pieces together. I could not help but make eye contact with Edward once again. His stare was one that burned holes into my soul. His butterscotch eyes were glossy and made him look as if he was in a totally different world, but knowing him, he probably was.

I took in a deep breath, "Listen. I don't know exactly what is going to happen so there is no need for any of you to panic." I tried to keep a positive tone to my voice but I felt it start to shake towards the end of my sentence. My eyes shifted towards Carlisle who was looking at me very intently as if he had something urgent to say. I decided to tone into his mind and find out what it was.

"Jessica can you hear me?" Carlisle's usually soft and gentile voice came out sounding annoyed as if he had been calling my name many times now. That was when I realized that he probably had been. I quickly shut out Edward from mine and Carlisle's mind conversation. Edward felt the lose of a mind and looked around confused until he understood that it was my doing and went back to gently stroking Bella's back.

I nodded my head towards Carlisle to show him that I was listening to what he had to say. He turned towards me and had an extremely concentrated look on his face.

"What is going on Jessica? Is it the Volturi again?"

Carlisle's golden eyes desperately searched my own for answers that would help him understand the situation that was at hand. I opened my mouth to talk but instead settled for a simple nod of the head. I watched as his eyes widened at the answer that I had just given him.

"What is the cause?" He asked franticly

I could hear the fear in his voice that automatically made me quiver. I had never heard Carlisle, the man who always portrayed the most courage and fearlessness in the family, develop into a man of pure confusion and lose. I had to give him some faith; if he had faith, then maybe I would have a little bit more myself.

I finally cleared my throat and spoke aloud, "Nothing has happened yet. I often have these weird visions that don't end up coming true. Plus if anything that is unlikely, would occur we are all prepared! And think about it, why would the Volturi attack me when they are so terribly fearful of me and my powers?" I grinned because the hope that I was sending them was finally getting to me and making me think that maybe everything would actually work out.

Everyone seemed to be pretty convinced except for of course-- Edward and Bella. However, that was in a way a good thing. I needed them to be prepared even if there was no immediate danger at the moment. I needed to figure out everything that I possibly could about what the Volturi had planned, and that would mean spending a hell lot more time here; which I don't necessarily mind. Maybe I would even enroll in school here or something! The thought of going to school at Forks made me so excited, but I knew that the Cullen's would not risk going back to high school in this town again for quite some time.

I finally had an idea of how to lighten the mood a bit. I turned on my heels slowly to meet Emmett's worried eyes. I frowned at him and made tisking noises to get his attention.

"Now Emmett, don't you know anything about protection? It is a scary world out there! You can't stand there looking all vulnerable like that, some vamps may take that as a weakness and think you are just a teddy bear or something!" I grinned as I saw his eyes darken a tad bit and a smirk form on his normally happy face.
