Funny.
Sarah assumed that being in the car with Clay would make her a lot more nervous, but truthfully that wasn’t the case. The more she sat in the car next to him as they drove back to her place, the more she felt as if she could trust him. He drove in silence, his face unreadable which drove Sarah insane. He was the type of man that was so kind and so genuine, but his dark side also made it nearly impossible to tell what he was thinking.
With the classical music playing on the radio, the car was just silent and it was driving her crazy. She peaked over at him, letting out one simple huff before speaking. “So what’s the plan with the knife? How do we even destroy it?”
Clay didn’t take his eyes off the road. “I’m not real sure. Of course, I’ve never actually gotten close enough to it to even find out. Every time I got on Elizabeth’s trail, she would find some way to loose me. She has eyes everywhere. As the years progress, she‘s working on trying to build an army so no one can lay a finger on her. This is something she has been working on for many years, and just recently decided to put her plans into action.”
“Those boys...were they...?”
“No, they were human that night. She must have snatched them up that night when we left. Compel them to do whatever she wants them to do as a human, and when they change they can still do their duties.”
“Compel? What’s that?”
Clay licked his lips and sighed. “Where a vampire can make a human do whatever they wish. Of course, only strong vampires can compel another, so it just comes to show just how strong she is.”
Sarah just slowly nodded, letting out a very soft sigh as she looked out the window. It sounds so easy, but with Elizabeth building an army to protect herself, it won’t be as easy as she assumed. “Just because she’s strong doesn’t mean she doesn’t have a weakness.” She muttered, “Everyone has a weakness.”
“Unfortunately it’s going to be hard to figure hers out. The woman is cold and is good at manipulating others into doing what she wants them to do. Getting close to her is going to be nearly impossible unless we take down those she has working for her.” And lord knows how many people that will be.
They drove in silence from that point on until they got to her apartment. Clay seemed to have grown tensed, pulling up to the building and turned the car off but he didn’t get out right away. Sarah eyed him. “What’s wrong?” Clay said nothing, getting out of the car and he closed the door. Sarah followed suit, walking behind him and into the building. “Clay, what’s wrong?” She asked again.
Clay looked back at her. “I hear someone in your apartment.”
Sarah gulped hard, staying close until they got to her apartment, the door was closed and when Clay looked the lock over it didn’t appear to have been tampered with. He put a finger over his lips to silence her, before he opened the unlocked door. He slowly opened it and stepped in, seeing suit cases and narrowed his eyes.
Sarah stood on her toes and peaked over his shoulder, seeing the bags. She narrowed her eyes, moving by him and stepped into the room, looking over to the hallway. “Hello?” She called out. Within moments an older man and woman came down the hall, wearing expensive looking clothes, yet casual. “G-George and Mary?” She then smiled.
The couple smiled at her lightly, Mary went over and gave her a hug. Sarah could smell the mixture of mothballs and expensive perfume. Sarah looked over the woman’s shoulder to George, his eyes had dark bags under them, caused by lack of sleep and possibly from crying. Mary let her go, but kept her hands on Sarah’s shoulders. “How are you doing?”
