"Sorry, what was the question?" I said.
"There was no question. I was simply making an observation."
"Oh sorry! What was the observation?"
"Young lady, I am inclined to put an immediate stop to these proceedings! Do you realize my time is valuable. I am preparing for a symposium in Paris tomorrow!"
Well, I wasn't exactly sure what a symposium was but it sounded at least a little bit impressive.
"Sorry ma'am," I said. "I'll try to be good."

"Don't worry dear," she added softly. "I'm probably being a bit harsh on you. Nervous about tomorrow, you see. That sort of thing. Just take your time... More sherry?"
"Oh yes, ma'am, I think that would definitely help."
I could feel the atmosphere lightening and I allowed myself to breathe.
