Chapter 16

Adam's POV

(A week later)

I mindlink Cresta, " Baby, where are you?"

"In my room, what? And I'm not a child... Don't talk like that." Ouch, that hurt.

"Bad mood?" Great, really. She's mad at me.

"No. Bring me food. I'm hungry."
I'm in my office, Chase is on border duty and Alpha has fallen ill. They say he will be fine in a day or two but until then, I have alpha duty.

"Can't, I'm stand-by alpha." I grit my teeth and pray that she won't kill me.

"Seriously? You have done that for days." She walks into my office. I have clutter everywhere and Cresta sits on a chair. "Why can't you take a break?" She crumples up a paper inviting Luna's and Alphas to a party in New York. She throws the paper at my head, hitting my forehead. "Cres, please relax, I'm done in 3 hours tops." I shrug and continue to sign papers, releases and treaties. "You haven't even slept in days, this is insane. You can't go on like this." She stands up and comes over and brushes through my hair. "I have no choice, Chase is the first in line, and he isn't here. I have a responsibility to this pack." She remains silent and exits the room. Have I made her mad?

Cresta's POV

I can't believe it! It's like he doesn't have time for me anymore. He's been so busy for the past week!

*Preach it sister!

"No you stay out of this, it's none of your business." I stomp my way up to Annabeth's room and open the door. I need to lose my temper somehow.

"Sissy!" She screams and runs up to me giving me a big hug. "You haven't seen me in forever! Come color with me!" I gaze over to her little blue table, a small coloring book of Marvel's 100 Superheroes on top. She is coloring Wonder Woman, my childhood favorite. "Okay." She's beginning to grow, fast. Her hair is a caramel color and all the way to her shoulders. She wears a size 6 now, small for an 8 year old. She was born fragile, a staggering 6 pounds and 2 ounces. I sit down to color with her and I choose Iron Man and begin to color.
"How have you been? Is School okay?"
"It's okay, but weird. I'm the only girl!" She tears a piece of paper, cru
"What have you been learning?"
"Reading a lot of books! I like reading!"
She turns around and pulls out a copy of Dr. Seuss' Wacky Wednesday. "Can you read it?" I ask gesturing to the book. "Yeah, I think." She flips to the first page and tries to read, but she is having a hard time. "I....w...wo..woke....u....up..." She's trying, that's all that matters. "Here, do you want me to help?" I grab the book from her hand. "Yes, please!" I read for her.

After I read the book Adam mindlinks me.

Are you mad at me?

No, just slightly frustrated and I'm busy.

With what?

Annabeth. I'm helping her read.

*Invite homeboy over...

"No, shut up!" I say louder than I thought.

Brother issues?

Yeah. Are you free from the shackles of life yet?

No, I will be done in an hour or two. Come over, we can spend my dinner break together, in the cafeteria.

Why?  I jump on top of Annabeth's bed and wrap myself in a fuzzy blanket. It's cold in here.

"I'm making Tacos!!!" He says loud, entering Annabeth's room.

Annabeth runs and jumps on Adams leg and screams, "BUBBY! Carry me!" Adam picks her up and tickles her stomach. She giggles loudly.  After a while, I pull my legs onto the bed pretzel style.
"Baby, what's wrong?" Annabeth slides off his leg and lands on the floor.

"I'm not 'baby' so don't call me that."

"Okay...... Sweetheart, what's wrong?"

"Nothing."

Adam's POV

(UH OH!!! Girl code: when they say 'nothing' they are
-tired
-mad
-moody
-'or its that time of the month')

"No, somethings wrong. Tell me."

"Not here, not now."

"Fine, lets go somewhere else." I gesture the door and she just sits there. Her sister is busy coloring."

"No-" she shrieks as I pick her up and toss her on my back. "What the hell?! What was that for?"

"Being grumpy. Can we go for a run?"
