Everybody had left before I had even got half way through my work. This person seemed to have a false identity and only traced a false relation with his parents and grandparents. I couldn't get my head around who the person really could be though and this was my job. This case had to be the hardest to get my head around because there was absolutely no records of this person signing anywhere with their false name. No hospital records, no prison records, no medical records, no anything. This person could be pretty much who ever they wanted to. They could be a mass murdered to the nicest person on the planet and I couldn't find out. For only 2 months I've been in this job and was already being promoted to the being the manager because I was so good at my it although I have to admit when I'm studying something I'm interested in I become very dedicated to what I do. I often find long lost relatives for people.
'Is this person even human?' I thought to myself as I pulled a weird face through thinking so much. I remained with the same expression on my face as I looked through their files on my computer screen and wondering where I went wrong with the information.
I must be missing something obvious here.
I heard a step behind me and instantly I shot around to see who it was because I was so on edge being so deep in my work.
It was my manager.
"It seems we're alone now." He announced with his arms up by his sides pointing around the place to show me absolutely nobody. "Everybody's gone home and it's just you and me" he said stepping out of his manager role and in to his normal Christian way.
His name is Christian by the way.
"It seems so" I turned back around to my computer to do more research on this patient. I didn't want another one of these conversations with him, not now, not ever. He gave me the creeps at the best of times.
My ears twitched as I could hear him making his way over to me. I stopped typing as he stood right behind me and began to stroke my hair softly and then started to massage my scalp. I raised my hand and knocked his hand away from my head as I turned around again.
"What are you doing?" I questioned him as I felt my eyebrows lower at the top of my nose and my voice was vicious
"Victoria" he said my name smoothly
"No" I told him sharply
"Come on"
"I said no" my voice began to raise
"You know you want to"
"What do you not understand about the word 'no'" I jumped up out my chair and pushed him away from me as I then walked off to the water machine to get me a drink
"Fine. Have it your way" he shouted over to me, "I'm going home now." he looked at his watch and then at my screen "It's 9:30pm and getting closer to Christmas. I'll let you lock this place up." he said sharply as he seemed to finally understand my rejection.
Christian turned around while adjusting his tie as I took another sip of the ice cold water and watched him walk off out the building probably to his car which was parked on the first floor.
I felt for my keys in my front right pocket. They were there.
I had the keys to this place copied a few times and placed them in each trouser so I wouldn't forget the keys at any time I was at work seeing as I tend to fall ill more often as I get older.
I thought it was a great idea if I'm being honest.
Slowly I wondered back over to my desk and leaned on the table to look closer at my screen. I just couldn't get my head around it, this person was clever at what they were doing or should I say, has done. I often squinted my eyes to try and figure it out some more but I couldn't make it out.
My head fell. My eyes were being to hurt as I could see the screen pixels and was becoming quite unfocused now. I looked at the clock in the corner of the screen.
10:12pm.
I lifted myself up off the table and took a few breaths to try and come back to normality and reality and I smiled at the empty place.
I turned around with the smile remaining on my face as I turned off the lamp next to the computer mouse and then walked to the door while flicking the switch to turn the dim lights off completely. I headed down to the first floor where I had never been before even though I had no reason to.
My curious mind took over my body and I headed for the exit down there. I pulled my bag over my shoulder and still for some reason I had a smile on my face as I walked past a small office just in front of the exit gates. My eyes looked in and realised it was Thomas in there. I knocked the door and waved at him as if to say bye.
"Oh" he sounded shocked "Hi. I mean good night"
I chuckled at his goofiness and walked off.
