We made it back to the house and darted to the basement.
Steve collapsed against the wall as soon as he turned the lights on.
There were no windows down there, so we were in the clear.
" You should get back to where ever you were staying, it's getting late," I told him as I took Steve's tattered shirt off. " Is my stuff still here?"
" No, Andrea had it."
" Your staying with her?"
" Yeah."
" Move that crate and take that hammer to the wall."
" Why?"
" Because I hid some clothes there when I first came here."
" In the wall?"
" An open place in the wall before Dad sealed it shut."
" Emma, I can't."
I turned back to Steve. " You can't what?"
" You have to kill me."
" I'm not killing you, why would I?"
" Because I might kill you."
While Darren was hammering the wall, Steve told me that he has a thirst for blood.
A big thirst.
" If that's the case, you'll have to find him." Darren said as he came back with the dusty duffle bag of clothes and sat them next to us.
" Darren, you don't have to get involved in this. You can live your life the way Mom and Dad wanted you to."
" Knowing that the last family I have is fighting a war no one knows 's about? No way."
" She's right Darren," Steve said in a weak voice. " Your parents never liked me. They would be pissed if-"
He started coughing.
" My decision is final."
" To the very end then?"
" To the very end."
" Then I need you to run up to Dad's greenhouse and get the chains and the lock's key from inside that weird looking frog vase thing he was sitting on the little table that was sitting next to where he kept all of his tools and get back down here."
He darted upstairs as I felt Steve's bloodlust grow.
" Hurry up, Darren." I told him as I got a wooden chair from the corner of the basement and brought it over.
" Emma, please." Steve said.
" You've saved us so many times while we were growing up, it's time we save your brother," I said as I sat him on the chair. " Stay with me."
Darren came back just then and I got Steve chained up.
" Now what?" Darren asked.
" Get that cup out of the bird seed bag." I said as I opened the scissors.
