With Carl's hand in mine, Jesses hand in my other, and Judith under Carls cloak, we descended the the stairs in our meat suits. The stench of rotten blood and guts stung my nose but I didn't care. What I did care about was the hundreds of walkers swarming around us.
~FLASHBACK~
"Ok kids! Hold hands with the person next to you and we will walk to the gymnasium!" said our third grade teacher. We joined hands and formed a long line of little kids to make the trek to the big building. I never liked holding hands with other people, and that applies mostly to situations like this. I frowned thinking my hand will hurt even more because of a cut I got during recess.
There's a little boy holding my right hand and a little girl with brunette hair holding my right. I didn't like the girl, but the boy was another story. He had light brown hair and the bluest eyes I had ever seen. The second our hands touched, my face turned beat red, so I looked down to avoid being discovered. The boy seeing my red face turned to the floor, noticed my hand and held it close to his face. I had no choice but to look up at his face because he pulled my hand up from where it was resting.
"What happened to your hand?" He asked, staring at the now bleeding cut. I just looked back down to the tile floor and shook my head, "It's nothing. I just cut it during recess." He stared at me dumbfounded. "But it's bleeding!" He exclaimed. I looked back up at him. "Yah, cuts do that. It'll just scab over anyway." I said putting our hands back down by our sides.
He wasn't putting up with this. "Pretty girls shouldn't be hurt." He said and let go of the hands he was holding and went up to the front of the line and got the teachers attention.
I, still around the back of the line had a face even redder then before. "Did he just call me pretty?" I asked myself. The girl brunette girl just frowned and shook her head. "No he shouldn't have called you pretty because your not. But I am prettier than you so I should get to hold Carl's hand." His name is Carl, huh? I'll have to remember that. She smirked and yanked her hand from mine and shoved behind her where she was standing, then took my other hurt hand and squeezed it, making me hiss in pain. The boy, Carl, returned with a small (favorite cartoon) bandage in his hand. When he saw the brunette girl in my place he frowned. "What are you doing here? (Y/N)'s supposed to stand here." He said bitterly to her. She widened her eyes in shock, and just smiled. "But aren't I prettier than (Y/N)? Don't you want to hold my hand instead?" She said nervously.
He just blinked at her, put his hand on her shoulder and moved her away from him, farther up the line with a scowl. He then turned to me, and smiled sweetly. "I got you a bandage. It's (favorite cartoon), like your pencil bag." He said, and took my hand and put on the bandage. 'He knows what I like? I've never talked to him and he already knows all about me.' I thought. He just smiled and took my hand again.
We then walked down the hallway and into the gymnasium.
~END OF FLASHBACK~
That memory flooded my mind once again, for the first time in a long time. I squeezed Carl's hand when we got to the end of the stairs. I pulled his hand and got his face close to mine, keeping in mind, Judith's little baby head poking through the bloody fabric. I whisper in his ear, "I remember you." He just pulled away and looked at me with wide eyes. His face then softened, as he remembered the memory that happened so long ago. He smiled and nodded as if giving me validation for what I had told him. He gave my hand a reassuring squeeze and we continued to walk with the rest of the group through the hoard of walkers.
~Short time skip~
The walkers seemed to be getting thicker now, and the smell and horror even worse. Their rotten faces and ever growling voices took my mind to a dark place. 'What if this happens to me right now? What if this is the end for our little group? I try to push it out of my mind when I start to hear a small voice coming from down our line of people. "Mom....... mom.........mom!" My eyes widened as I watched little Sam call out to his Mother, who couldn't hear him over the growling of the dead ones surrounding our whole group.
