Zays POV

"...and Maya was one of them."

I took a deep breath and looked at Lucas. He has mixed emotions written all over his face. I still have more explaining to do.

"Maya was my best friend. While all the other 5 kids in the class just sat around and didn't listen, Maya and I would interact. Her family had enough money, she just had to live with her stepmother because her parents passed."

As I talk, little pictures of Maya flash and I smile. I miss her way to much for my own good.

"Every day I would walk her home on a dirt path sprinkled with sunflowers. I would always pick up a sunflower and hand it to her before we parted."

The memories are so vivid it's almost as if I can reach out and touch her. Her long yellow-blonde hair, her smile that was so bright, and her happy demeanor.

"And of course, her house was on the other side of the village, so it took me a very long time to get home. It was worth it though, I loved her as a best friend, and her the same."

Lucas looks at me and I can tell he might have a feeling he knows what will happen next. I let out a humorless laugh and continue.

"But one day, things all changed. We were talking about John's lesson that day, I remember it was a lesson on making fire with 2 leaves and a stick. Anyway, we reached the dirt road and I was about to give her a hug, which was tradition, and she looked at me like I've never seen her look at me before. She moved her face and kissed me. I was 14 and this was my first kiss, so I didn't kiss her back and when she pulled away I looked like a frightened tomato."

Lucas laughs but looks eager for the rest.

"She looked so dejected when I didn't kiss her back, and she walked away without saying a word. But I wanted to kiss her back, and on the lonely walk home I realized that I had feelings for her. And this time, not in a friend way. But when we went back to school, Maya didn't really talk to me. She ignored me if I said something to her, and looked at her shoes if I stared at her."

That day was a living hell for me. I so wanted my best friend, my crush, to talk to me again.

Lucas looks at me sympathetically.

"Bro, I'm so sorry. I know how you feel, but not really, because I've never really liked anyone, or even had a girlfriend, but I can imagine how it must feel." Lucas finishes his mini rant.

"But I'm not done yet!" I fake a pout. "So, since I'm sometimes a gentleman, I walked Maya home. And boy, it was awkward. When we reached the dirt path, she went to walk away from me, but I turned her around so she was looking at me. I kissed her again, and she didn't pull away. For like a minute, I kissed her, and I really liked it. She pulled away, breathless, and walked away. It was weird, I kinda just stood there on the path, watching her walk away."

I smile at the memory.

"And we continued to be together and kiss and all that lovey dovey stuff. But when we were 15, the school shut down. Maya didn't tell me her address, and I lost touch with her. I haven't seen her since. And I may or may not still have feelings for her, even when I met the girl today."

Lucas looks at me like im crazy and disregards the feelings part and the new girl. "Why didn't you follow the dirt path you guys walked together to get to her house?!!"

I stand up from my seat. "Don't you think ive tried! Don't you think I spent hours upon hours retracing our footsteps to try and find her? If I really loved her, don't you think I would have done all that?!" I didn't realize my voice had gone up to almost a scream by the time I finished.

"Sorry, I guess I didn't think." Lucas says.

Suddenly, Lucas's face brightens up and he looks as if he might jump off the palace roof from pure joy.

"Zay! Father had been pestering me about throwing a ball to find myself a wife!"

"And you mean..." I have no idea what he is implying.

"Father wants to invite EVERY single maiden in the land, and if Maya and this new girl live in the land, then you can choose!"

"Oh, my, thank you so much! You have no idea how much this means to me!" I say.

Lucas brushes off his epaulets and smirks. "I am the master." And with that comment, he walks out of my room.

I almost cry.

I missed Maya so much, and if she comes, I can finally reconnect with her.

And I cannot wait.

So maybe Zay and Riley may not end together ehhhh.
And lucas needs to find a bride too...
